Bikers riding for charity get red light tickets
Friday, July 09, 2010

They paid $10 for a charity and then the city asked for $120 more. A handful of motorcyclists riding for tornado relief victims were given red light camera tickets.

Hundreds of bikers were riding on Reynolds at Heatherdowns. The red light camera gave them tickets and when the bikers called the city, they did not get very much help, until today.

On a three hour charitable bike ride through tornado ravaged areas, Rick Jurski earned himself a souvenir from the city. "You sure couldn't slam on the brake in the middle of the run, you'd have 200 bikes hitting you in the back," says Jurski.

When he rode his bike through the intersection at Reynolds and Heatherdowns, the intersection was blocked off by other riders to let all the bikes through.

Police chief Mike Navarre s****d 13abc the June 19 video of bikers, including Jurski going through the intersection. He explained, "When someone engages in a charitable event, we tend to treat it like funerals."

Jurski rides in a few charity runs a year. He often promotes the charity rides at his east Toledo bike shop. "Maybe TPD got more than tornado victims collecting on these tickets," laughs Jurski.

Turns out, Toledo police decided to waive the handful of tickets. After days of trying to get his ticket revoked, Jurski found out today he doesn't owe money. "Person that reviewed the violations, I'm not sure if they knew it was a charitable event or felt they didn't have the right to excuse it," wonders Jurski.

Had the same problem here in West Haven, Ct a few years back. No tickets though but were hassled by the cops. We were on a charity ride for the Am Heart Assoc. Cops pulled us over, called for back up, they handed out a few tickets and we were told to get out of their town.
Hope no one in their families ever needed the help of the An Heart Assoc.

I use to be a cop and many of the cops I worked with were bikers and never would have done anything like that unless ordered to do so by the upper eshelon! In fact, we would have blocked off the intersections for the riders.
