Did Police Roadblocks Slow Down The Speedway?

LANCASTER, NY ( WKBW ) Every Wednesday is cruise night at Dunn Tire Raceway Park...and it is big business with thousands of people showing up every week.

****ver, the operators of the raceway tell Eyewitness News the State Police are targeting the raceway and taking a big bite out of their profits.

Ralph Gulluzzi, Dunn Tire Raceway Park promoter says, "The State Police are targeting us by setting up roadblocks on Gunnville near Wehrle and Genesee...so you can't get to the racetrack without passing through the roadblocks."

Between the two checkpoints, there were 154 tickets issued and two arrests. 54 of those tickets were for motorcycle related violations.

Rebecca Gibbons from the New York State Police responded, "We are not targeting any business that is not our goal whatsoever. What we are looking for is traffic situations where there may be hazards, large amounts of traffic which, in that area, over 3,800 cars...that's alot of traffic."

State Police say that they do focus on areas where they know traffic will be heavy, like concerts, festivals, and sporting events. In this case, they knew that large amounts of motorcyclists would be in the area for cruise night...and with over 17 motorcycle related deaths over the last several months, it was a good time to educate riders.
