T-Rod's CFL 2up build
Well all my parts showed up at Scooters finally. Made a quick drive from Jax down to get them Saturday. Totally excited to get this project going. Been wanting to do a build forever and finally decided to pull the trigger! I'll be around asking questions and posting progress reports along the way.
Parts thus far:
CFL 2up
HHI 3 degree trees
Pro One tubes 4 over
FXST legs
Black Bike Wheels 18x5.5 21x2.15
Baker 5spd
Ultima 113
Well time for the pics
Prep frame for primer
Frame primered, front end installed and wheels on. Roller baby!
Wheels turned out great!
I'll have the engine and trans in soon!! stay tuned...

Nice but I never understood why some people like to primer the frame just to grind it off and weld on their tabs and then primer frame again. It's not going to rust.

Plain primer is a bad idea for just the reason you mentioned, but there is "weld through" primer. Steel workers use this to protect structural steel during construction, and when ready you weld right through it. But I agree, no need to waste time with spraying primer... I just wiped my frames down with WD-40 when I got them... no rust...

Well with in a couple days the surface rust began showin up, so i figured a light coat wouldn't be the worst thing to do. Only took a few minutes and didn't cost anything. Shouldn't be hard to wire wheel off when welding needs to take place. Actually might try removing it later. Give something to do...time I have plenty of....money on the other hand. Did I mention I have plenty of time... :-)

Unless you are planning on welding and doing your bodywork, (plastic filler, polyester putty, molding welds, etc...) right away,.......it's a great idea to prime the frame to keep moisture away from it. (yes, it will rust)
And primer takes nothing to sand off when work is needed, so that's not an issue.
Also, soaking the frame, or any other bare metal, with any type of oil is a horrible idea. It soaks into the surface and is a bodyman and painter's worse nightmare. Contaminants like that are bad for adhesion of anything applied to the surface, and can completely ruin a paint job later on down the line.
And before anyone says,......"well my frame and sheet metal came right from the manufacturer covered in oil"........of course it did,.....they didn't want it to arrive to you covered in rust,.....(see, told you it would rust ) They are not concerned about the problems later on.
Remove it, and prime it,.....don't add to it.

I would never put oil or Wd-40 on it but it's not going to rust to the point were its an issue. Any how I noticed that is a new CCI frame. Good luck with that frame we have an other member on here who has had nothing but issues with it. It will be interesting to see how your build goes.

I agree,....I would much rather deal with a little surface rust than the oil,........but I like to prevent the rust, too.

what kind of problems are they having??? i bought my frame from wcc during the sale and it a disaster, i was thinking when cci took them over they might be better. guess not, also the first bike i built i didn't prime the frame and yes it had rust all over it, had it blasted before paint, my cfl i primed and its no big deal when its time to weld, dont oil it!

WD-40 isn't oil... totally different chemical composition. Any good painter is going to clean bare metal with great care, even if its already been media blasted. My point was use weld through primer if you are going to prime... I never said oil. Like it was posted before, most parts come oiled... that will be cleaned with the same degreaser/cleaner/solvents that the painter will use. WD 40 breaks down oils, period. Even after media blasting there will still be residual fingerprints, dirt etc that need to cleaned which is only accomplished with the correct cleaning solutions.
You can dip a frame in sludge... clean it it, media blast it, and then final solution cleaning to prep for paint. Your paint job will not begin to flake off as if oil begins to 'seep' out of the pores down the road. Paint is all about the prep work. Now dipping in HOT oil, that is a different story and depends on the base metal you are talking about.
Since delivery in 2007 my frame has had nothing on it but whatever oil was on it from WCC and only 1 light coat of WD 40, no major rust since. When my paint job is done I can promise you that the WD 40 will not creep out and destroy my paint... period.

You're frame had tranny plate issues too? Yeah the CCI frame is a bit of work, could just be my frame (human error) though, I haven't seen another CCI CFL frame build so I can't say if the problem is mass or just mine.

That odd shaped trans plate was the only thing really wrong with yours wasn't it?

The Exhaust notch on the seat post looked to be on the other way, and yeah the trans plate.. The other problems were part related.
I will see how it goes when I out it back together with the shimming though, looked ok when I was taking it apart.
