My point was use weld through primer if you are going to prime... I never said oil. Like it was posted before, most parts come oiled... that will be cleaned with the same degreaser/cleaner/solvents that the painter will use. WD 40 breaks down oils, period. Even after media blasting there will still be residual fingerprints, dirt etc that need to cleaned which is only accomplished with the correct cleaning solutions.
You can dip a frame in sludge... clean it it, media blast it, and then final solution cleaning to prep for paint. Your paint job will not begin to flake off as oil begins to 'seep' out of the pores down the road. Paint is all about the prep work. Now dipping in HOT oil, that is a different story and depends on the base metal you are talking about.
Since delivery in 2007 my frame has had nothing on it but whatever oil was on it from WCC and only 1 light coat of WD 40, no major rust since. When my paint job is done I can promise you that the WD 40 will not creep out and destroy my paint... period.
This is great,......... here you go,......check the link WD-40 Facts & Myths | WD-40 Ingredients

I'll point out one particular statement.

Quote:
While WD-40 Multi-Use Product it is not a grease, it is formulated with strong lubricating oils and other ingredients,
It doesn't break down oil,.....it displaces water,.....WD = Water Displacement

You state the painfully obvious when mentioniing that any good painter will clean the surfaces to be worked on before anything is applied, but why add to the potential contamination,...is what I was getting at.

This statement is not quite accurate ether......."Your paint job will not begin to flake off as if oil begins to 'seep' out of the pores down the road."

Ask the guy who's had gas fumes,......not a leak, but just fumes,... which were just enough to seep behind a paint job, and ruin his tank,.........ask him if anything seeping out, is not to be worried about.

Lastly, just curious,....how many paint jobs have you done?

Just to clarify where my thoughts and observation come from,.......I paint at the very least 2 jobs a day, (sometimes 3 or 4),......that's 10 jobs a week, at 50 weeks a year, mutiply that times 30 yrs,.....(I'm 49 and have been painting full time since 19),.........my math says, at the very least,...... that's 15,000 paint jobs.

I've seen first hand, what can ruin a paint job and cause plastic and putties to "not" adhere to a surface. I'm only trying to save anyone who reads these threads, some "possible" headaches.

(Before being accused of boasting, I've been here on this site for 5+ years, and I've never listed my credentials, certifications, work experience, training, nor made any threads dedicated to just that,.....I only occasionally post up pics of some of my work and give some advice,... if I think it can be usefull and/or helpfull. This time I felt it was necessary to at least mention what I do on a daily basis, just to clarify that I've been around long enough to see a lot, and would like to pass on anything that might help another CC member.)

I still consider females in their 20s and 30s,... "girls",.........remember,...I'm old.

And when older guys are dating someone,...they're still referred to as girlfriends,........not womanfriends.

Now enough already,.....can't keep jacking T-rod's CFL thread.

I commented way back that the design of the tranny plate
is an issue for welding - combine the design and poor welding tekniques
and it will mis-align.

I painted my frame in rust oleum flat black and rode it for 4 years,

Well dropped the engine and trans in. Engine went in without a problem and sits flush everywhere. Trans went fine, but the 5th stud sits about 1 or 2 mm high max. I'm satisfied at this point. Wait and see how things line up after the Primo Slimeline shows up.

T-rod, I like that lift you have there... My Craftsman lift is going on 8 years old and looking pretty beat, but it gets the job done. I'll have to check that one out and see if it's worth the upgrade!

Yeah I decided on just a jack vs table lift. I was tempted to get a table lift, but figure I'm not too old to crawl around on the floor just yet. Plus save the extra $ for the build...it all adds up!

That looks good but wait till you bolt the primary on before you shim anything. I use chevy starter shims. Come in a pack with different thicknesses

Prime, don't prime. WD40. Hell, the whole things going to be sanded down anyway, The primer might make it a little more difficult to sand down and unless you got every piece of rust off before you primed, it will rust underneath. The whole frame will be wiped down with wax and grease remover before the bodywork is done to it, That will even take off the WD40

sorry guys, didn't read through the whole thread...we're way past this point
