Hellion CFL Build.
 
Retiring my old account HellionsMC. Time for a new build thread. My build is far enough along it's all but locked in. Expect lots of pics.

08.23.10 - Tank mount kit.
08.30.10 - Brembo controls.
09.10.10 - Knurled grip and footpeg set.
09.20.10 - Golan petcock.
09.21.10 - Ignition switch.

What cfl frame are you going with? What specs.?

I'm 5'7" so at the time I was leaning toward a 2up frame. Hadn't purchased it yet though. As far as theme, I was thinking Barfly style: wide apes, Deuce forks, King Sportster tank, web struts. Nothing earth shattering. At this point, I wanted my bike to be exactly identical to a bike that would have come out of the LBC, down to the smallest details.

12.01.10 - Bought some 2" WCC Maltese Cross risers that had been modified to fit on 1-1/4" bars. The price was very affordable and I figured it would work perfectly with my bars. When I got the risers I realized the boring-out job was very crude and looked terrible even after the bars were installed. I sold these pretty quickly, didn't even keep them long enough to take a picture.

12.06.10 - WCC Rigid 2-8 fender.

Still just a small pile of parts at this point, but a lot of the key pieces to the Barfly look already obtained. More to come.

12.23.10 - Finally scored a 2" up frame. Had been searching on ebay for months and all I could find was 4" up frames.

01.01.11 - End of the year proved to be a very expensive month for me. Wasn't planning on making any major purchases for a while after locating my frame, then a set of shop risers show up...

Get her up on the lift and get cracking.... Hope to see a great build that you will really dig. Let me know if you need anything. I came up with a few tricks and special tools I used to get the rear fender mounted and drive line straight, which is the first and most time consuming part of your build process.

Thanks, yeah the rear wheel has been a nightmare part of this build and is still not completely resolved. This being my first build I made a lot of mistakes and wasted a lot of money unnecessarily. I'll be documenting it all in here, hopefully others can learn from my mistakes.

From a distance the wide apes look good, except for the fact that the ends of the bars are a hair over 1" in diameter. On the shop bikes the Cyclesmiths bars had a step down from 1-1/4" to 1". On my bars the diameter is gradually tapered. I contacted Cyclesmiths and they said they don't make the stepped bars anymore. I tried sanding the bars but there is a good amount of material that would need to be removed in order for the throttle to operate smoothly.

Worse still, my risers won't clamp squarely on the bars when spaced out properly. If I install them squarely on the stepped-down section, they are spaced 3-1/4" apart, 1/4" shy of the proper riser spacing.

I don't think the wide apes are the way to go, JMO... So if you are having trouble with the diameter I'd suggest Chassis Design Co. Bars. I don't think you will be disappointed with them.

CycleSmiths bars are what the DD has on it. And most of the barflys that came after.

Keep in mind Cloud that these purchases all happened nearly three years ago, I'm just reiterating the build process. And yeah like Devon said, the shop used Cyclesmiths bars so that's what I bought, to my disappointment.

After finding the bars fit like crap, I was still determined to run them and figured I would simply grind the bars enough to clear the risers.

If you grind them you'll expose raw steel and rust will follow quickly... I think you'll dig the apes Chassis Design Co has (3 sizes), and it will save you a huge head-ache. They come in Chrome or raw steel, probably for way less than you might think.

End mill the outside of the risers to fit around the 1.25" bars. They'll fit fine. There isn't anything wrong with CycleSmith bars at all. Check out JROCKS 2up, no problem with those bars at all. I looked at all kinds of other bars and the bend radius on all that I looked at are not as tight as the CycleSmith bars.
