Ask your Buddy to show you the reports...Ive had my 127 for over 4 years and have never seen anything regarding failures etc...There was an issue back in 05, 06 or 07 with pistons, but that has long since been resolved...I would put them up against anything else out there as far as reliability is concerned...Oh, and they will outrun most of them as well....

first off...let me just say my buddy is a Harley certified tech and bascally feels there is nothing like an HD powerplant...i at all, maybe an SS motor......he's a nut..lol
that said...he just googled some reveiews on the 120"...and got a bunch of postsfrom forums regarding issues from the factory with improper assembly & pushrod issues/tappet roller failure...
this motor is an '05...so I guess thats why he commented....
Im not in the habit of believing random posts...and havent heard anything thus far bad..
but thats why Iposted in this forum....
unsuccesfully by the way...lol...no prob though...the build is going on still....

I pulled a 127 down and all was good, the parts in side that motor are of good qaulity and will give you a lot of miles. If your buddy is a HARLEY tec get him to rip it down and give you the O.K. i bet he gets a big supprise when looks in inside that motor. good luck mate.

all of these aftermarket motors are copies of HD motors down to the last nut and bolt, just modified a bit. 99% of the parts are interchangeable between all motors and since the late 70's early 80's aftermarket parts have become better quality than HD.

I've been riding my 127 since 2006. Never had a problem. As a matter of fact it's one of the few bikes I own that always starts instantly, even after sitting for a month. I can't even say that for my stock bikes. It's a great engine.

Ultima did have tappett failures years ago like 10 when they first introduced the engines. They quickly put a fix to that and change manufactures. I know one motor was having piston skirt issues too and since then they've fixed that as well. One thing he probably didn't tell you is people who did have issues had great customer service and Ultima was more than willing to solve any problems with free replacement parts, upgrades and what not even with questionable installation and oil priming and break in procedures. I've researched it to the end and back before I bought my Ultima motor, even called and talke thier ear off a few times. They honestly admit in the beginning the motor program was a learning curve. If you are leary of the year of motor and condition or prior use, the least I'd do is change out the lifters and make sure the roller rockers look to be in good shape.

for a motor design thats not even suppose to run they've been around for a hundred years. motors break, thats the nature of the game and then you have to fix them. I never had a motor break on me but living up north the motor got pulled every winter and torn down why? I just love tearing motors down and rebuilding them In your case I would pull the top end, check rod play, piston pin play, make sure the valves are seating good and the guides are not loose or tight, replace the valve seals, check the rocker arms for gouges and end shims for play then put it back together. you'll be good to go all season.

I would double check that your 05 has the Mahle pistons. They did have a "'piston slap" issue around that time. They made the change to Mahle pistons to solve the motor seizing problem....Call Ultima and give them the motor serial number...They can give you the build specs. and maybe will do the change under warranty if you have the old pistons.
