oil seal

G-day all Batto here,I am told if you flip the crank seal over when running a belt drive set up, this will stop oil leaking onto the belt and causing slipping or worse. any thoughts on this.

batto

g-day all i am new to this site and would like some advice if you can help. I got a complete package off Ultima and only after a few miles this motor starts to complain .base gasket leak on a ultima127, 1950 miles on it ,also crank seal leaks a fair bit of oil as well is this normal for these motors, my old evo never did this. I know this motor is highly strung but i think this is bullshit for a new motor, i dont mind pulling it down because i can check it out , maybe a shity o-ring at the bottom left head bolt who knows.

I am no guru like most on here, but perhaps some will bring up venting problems. I too have the 127 and looking forward to seeing what it has, (After break in) ...

A buddy had this 127 proof motor in his Demonition from SMW that had the same problem with the base gasket leaking....SMW said it was normal and it would dry up with use,(I've never heard that one before!!) It didn't ''dry up'' so we changed the gasket, being in England it would have been far to much hassel to send it back to the states for replacement,it's not a hard job at all to do,but it shouldn't need it on a new motor......

Thanks Pete it is a new motor and i dont think it will dry up as these things are suposed to have a steel gasket in them, i have built a few race engines in my time and flogged the shit out of em with no problems like that at those miles.IT has filled the sump a couple of times and maybe this is the problem time will tell. i love the power of this thing wheelstands in third gear the wife loves it. 89 Heritage. I will pull it down after xmas if it gets any worse. thanks again.

If you don't wanna do it again I would suggest you purchase a new seal and then put it back in the opposite direction.

The sprocket shaft seal leak is typical on most motors with an open belt drive. James makes a double lip seal that works well or some guys just use a standard seal and install it backwards

Welcome to Club Chopper Batto, I believe one thread for this topic is sufficient so I merged your threads. Try not to post the same topic multiple times. Plenty of guys here happy to help you out. If you need parts, John from Scooters is the best.

Again welcome to club chopper

After I've broken in motors I always check the torque specs on on the bolts. My Ultima 120 was off a bit (and dripping a bit) after a few hundred miles and it stopped once I re-torqued. It's probably against the rules of some but it works for me.

John, have part # for the James double lip seal or do you stock them? Working on my 113 build this winter and don't want to get it running only to have to "fix" this issue. Will order next week with my basic wire harness if you have them.

Thanks

Thumbs down Ultima 127

The Ultima 127 in evo motor is a piece of garbage. My Ultima POS motor has less than 100 miles on it and it leaks a quart an hour. It took more than a year to complete my build so it's past Ultimas BS one year warranty. Steer clear of Ultima. They don't stand behind their products.
