Just figured that I would mention... I have heard a freakin' thing from the state. Not that it would surprise anyone here in Illinois. I think it's been about 6 weeks since all my paperwork was approved and I havent heard crap. I started this about 2 1/2 months ago. Disappointing to say the least.

probably still have ....

probably still have a couple weeks. Pretty much been that way for the last number of years. People need to realize this BEFORE starting a project. All you can do is hang in there, and be patient. Nothing you can do. Probably their busiest time of the year. The vast majority who decide to build, wait until spring to get things going. Then, Sec. of State's office is saturated.

Hopefully, you'll be on the road soon.

Yeah, I realized that before I started. I worked like a dog all thru winter to get it on the road in March... then anticipated a 2 month wait. Maybe they (Sec of state) shouldn't have taken on this whole trailer inspection program.
Least they could do is not mess up my neck by stamping it. How about a freakin' tamper proof sticker somewhere like a lot of the other states use.
Yep... nothing can be done about it. A family member is getting ready to do a street rod title. I believe they grant a temp 90 day license during the wait process. Maybe the danger of a poorly built cycle is why they don't issue plates until the inspection.
I'll update again when I learn more.

Yep - your plan is the same as everybodys - don't start until winter, figure it will be all done by the first warm day. then sit and wait.
Don't know what you are talking about - We'd rather have them stamp than some big ugly sticker. If you did it right, shouldn't be any bigger than 1/2" by 2". We always mask it off, leave a clean pad, then clear afterwards. Not a big deal at all.
And the reason they now have to do trailers is exactly that - too many poorly built, un-safe trailers on the road.
Talk to the inspector when he does make it there - most likely will tell you all the horror stories of absolute POS bikes they see, as well as trailers.

My last bike had a South Carolina ID sticker and it was under the seat. Nowhere to be seen. You're right though... for sure. Illinois would probably have some giant decal and it would look like shit if it were on a downtube or nect. Discretely under the seat would be good.
My frame is powdercoated so I dont think taping off was an option. I'm lucky it's just gloss black. I pity the guys who have a kandy painted frame. But if it's painted at least you could plan accordingly.
Were your necks stamped on the right or left side? Redneck has a big old "RE" stamped on the right side already. Left side is wide open.
Thanks for the input...

Decided to call the state this week and find out where I was in the process. It's been almost 10 weeks since my paperwork was approved and forwarded to the State Police. They had me in the system but could not give me any idea on when I would be inspected. The guy commented that it was a first come first serve deal. So I said "Is there a list then?" He said no. It was actually just up to the investigator/inspector on when they would come see me. He took my phone number and said that he would have the investigator call me. That was on Tuesday. Needless to say... nobody has called.
Big bike show tomorrow.... too bad I don't have a legal bike to ride. Our tax dollars at work in the state of Illinois. But if you're reading this than you already know Illinois sucks.

lol

powder coated frame, with no thought to neck stamp? Masking on Powder only requires the correct treatment. What did you do for your motor mounts, and trans. mounts? Better not be powder under there.

Just take an Exacto knife, and carefully scribe, then remove the powder where the pad will be. Really kinda simple. Same thing if it was overlooked while painting. Its not difficult - the only way its going to look like shit is if someone does a "hack" job clearing the area.

Bet when you go to the bike show, there will be plenty of good looking bikes, all with #'s stamped in the neck, right side - and its not that big of a deal. They look just fine.

Pad it typically on the right side. Many frame manufacturers have pad left in the neck - on the right side. Its not like Illinois is the only state to do this.

As for Illinois, not sure why you stay, then. Got no problems here. I'll gladly stay in Illinois over any of the typical low paying states.

I plan on using the exato knife technique. I can't find any documentation anywhere on how big of an area to clean off. I guess I'll wat till they come in person or ask him over the phone if he ever calls.

You're right about wages being higher. I work at a machine shop and the wages are good. Other reasons like family and a spouse with cancer keeps me glued down to a job with benefits so there's no disruption in health care. I didn't mean to imply that the entire state sucks...I just think the state govt isn't what it should be. I'm glad you're happy but I think you might be in the minority that are happy with the funtion of our state government.

Thanks. I hope so too. I'll post again if/when I hear something.

I checked out the custom bikes at the show. Most were using harley frames with factory numbers. I did see one where it looked like the powdercoat had been taped off. That looked okay although the rectangle of bare steel was a little crooked. But I'd be happy if mine looks that nice.
Redneck puts the big "RE" on the right side of the neck. In all seriousness... it's going to be a pain to stamp fore or aft of their stampings. I'll pull the right side fork for the guy doing the stamping otherwise he's not going to be real happy that Redneck put that right there.

Doubt they'll inspect it with the fork removed, or allow you the time to remove it. You better be ready when they show. Otherwise, maybe you'll need a "re-schedule"...... just have the pad ready for them.
