State by State Registration Requirements
State by State Registration Requirements
Every state should have a web site describing in detail what equipment (turn signals, horn, etc) they require to have a motorcycle legally registered. If you have a link to your states web site please post up and I will add it to the list. It would be great if we could get all 50 states up here!
Colorado
Connecticut
Illinois
New Jersey
Texas
Virginia
Iowa

Ok, I'll start with the Virginia Title process since I'm doing it now.
Send the following to Richmond:
Complete form VSA 22 (you can get it off their web site - www.dmvnow.com.
MSO's for Frame, Transmission and Motor.
Notarized statement of how the vehicle was constructed.
Picture of the completed motorcycle.
AND money...
$10.00 for the VIN application. CHANGED - increased to $10 on 7/1/06
$125.00 for an examination fee.
This is sent to:
Division of Motor Vehicles
Attn: Title & Registration Work Center
Room 601
2300 West Broad Street
Richmond, Virginia 23220
CHANGED:
They also want the 3% sales tax sent in with form VSA17A.
And send it registered.

Thanks Rastoy,
Can I do anything to get the process moving right now? I'm just a couple weeks from finishing my mock up.
I'm so surprised at Virginia regulations.
-No handlebar height limit
-Signals not required
-No acoustical criteria (no muffler required)

The site says turn signals are required on bikes after 1960 in Texas. Does anyone know if this is correct? You didn't have to have them a few years ago, I wonder if they've changed the laws.

Yeah, I know. A couple years back they were only required if the bike was manufactured with turn signals on it. If you find out anything post up here...

i would send it priority mail rastoy,. i have been told several times it goes to the bottom of the pile otherwise, but your link isnt working. i realize your post is old, but i thought i would add a few links. most virginia forms can be downloaded from the DMV site.
heres one required http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/pdf/vsa17a.pdf
to search DMV forms: http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/forms/index.asp
there are also forms such ass application for lost titles, odometer statements, duplicate titles etc.

There is nothing on the Rhode Island DMV site but here are the requirements. Just went through my second bike with them.
Submittals:
1.) 4 pictures of bike, front, rear, and sides.
2.) MSO's for frame, transmission, and engine. (According to inspector, these 3 items must be purchased new. I don't even know whether or not that's legal.)
3.) Copy of I.D. (Drivers license or state I.D.)
4.) SSAN and address of bike owner.
Bike requirements.
1.) No more than 45 degrees total rake.
2.) Trail must be between 2" and 14" (even though they don't check and don't know how to check).
3.) Mirrors required.
4.) Turn signals required.
5.) Mufflers or baffles required, no loud exhaust.
6.) Open belt drives must have a top and side cover.
7.) Final drive chain or belt must have a guard.
8.) Front and rear brake must operate brake light independently.
9.) License plate must be mounted horizontally.
10.) Must have speedometer with odometer.
11.) Rear fender must extend 12" from rear of seat. Must have front and rear fenders.
12.) Must have fuel petcock.
13.) Horn required.
There is no definitive list of requirements for R.I. because I asked for a list or guideline. From what I can gather they use a compilation of local requirements and federal laws. Some of the things required were required because the inspector "felt" they should be. Like turn signals for example, are not required in RI, but he said since they were required in adjoining states like MA, that he would require them.
