Big Bear Choppers 2004/2005 SLED, Venom, and Devils Advocate Frame Recall
This posting is from Big Bear American Made Choppers, Inc., and pertains to all 2004 and 2005 Sled, Venom, and Devils Advocate Chopper Owners - 350 motorcycles and kits. Please note this communication does not pertain to the ProStreet configuration of the models noted - they are unaffected by this action.
We were unable to respond by the 21st of March, as we have been coordinating the recall action with the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration ("NHTSA"), and recall actions are governed by specific regulatory instruction. We have determined certain frame welds may not have sufficient strength where the neck is connected to the backbone and the down tube. While some welds may be of sufficient strength, there is no way to ascertain the strength of the weld by visual inspection. As a result, and in the interest of owner safety, we are recalling all frames of the affected models. Owners of the models noted above must not ride their bikes until repair is made.
We will be coordinating the repair procedure with our Dealer network in the coming days. The repair of the motorcycle will be made at no cost to the owner of the affected model, and will include an allowance for paint of the area affected by the repair. In addition to coordination with our Dealer network, we have retained the services of R. L. Polk to assist us in locating all owners of 2004 and 2005 SLED, Venom, and Devils Advocate Choppers. We will be contacting the owners by mail to notify them of the recall.
Questions regarding this posting should be directed to our Warranty Department at (909) 878-4340.
We have manufactured over 5,000 motorcycles and motorcycle kits. The safety and welfare of our Big Bear Chopper owners is of paramount importance to us; I thank you in advance for your attention to this important safety matter.

So Dave...since I'm one of the 350 affected owners, tell me about this "repair".

We are not going to see any kind of post again from him.
And this is complete horse shit. They are going to grind on our bikes and reweld them. Then try and match the paint, what a fucking joke!
If the neck welds were not safe, what makes the seat post welds any safer? Or how about the welds on the swingarm? Now I have to trust "Billy Bob's Bike Shop" to "fix" my bike.

Repainting the "affected area"
What about a powder coated frame?

Brutha I hear ya...That's why I want to know what this "repair" really is. Matching my paint is not going to happen. The entire frame is going to have to be redone.

I am more pissed now, than when I thought I had to strip my bike and send it to Cali. At least that made more sense.

I would think that the affected area would be every weld on the frame. That's a lot of touch up paint.
And why on earth would they even attempt this and just not ship out a new frame and be done with it.

New frame means new Vin # and a lot of bullshit that goes with that.
I can't beleive that the NHTSA would go along with this horse shit. How can two welds be bad and rest of the welds be okay?

Do the dealers own welders or for that matter have a qualified man to do the job?
I can see that his thread will last way into 2009

I couldn't agree more Concrete Guy...Unless they had a designated "neck welding guy"...then every weld is in question.

this is not an acceptable solution to me. we should all be asking for a new frame. I will rebuild it, and accept a fair price for paint, but I will not bend over without a fight.

this is bullsh@T, Not anywhere near acceptable. What am I supposed to ride while my bike is being completely rebuilt. I spent 35k for what? What about my ride plans? My laughlin trip. My powdercoated frame? The resale value of my bike? Any damage done to parts or painted sheetmetal during the process? Why not a new frame? I got a million of these questions, why dosen't some one from big bear give me a call with some answers.

Perhaps BBC could demonstrate this "repair" and touch-up paint solution on Larry's frame and post some pics.
