Gov. Mike DeWine signs new law legalizing earplug use for Ohio motorcyclists
Updated 3:20 PM; Today 3:20 PM
By Andrew J. Tobias, cleveland.com
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio motorcyclists will legally be allowed to wear earplugs while riding, under a new law signed Friday by Gov. Mike DeWine.
House Bill 129 also allows motorcyclists to wear earphones, although only for hearing protection. Previously, wearing earplugs was a minor misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $150.
The new law will take effect in 90 days.
Earplugs help prevent long-term hearing damage from wind noise, bill proponents say, while still allowing riders to hear emergency sirens, car horns and other important sounds on the road. The bill passed both chambers of the state legislature unanimously. It drew no public opposition.
DeWine motorcycle bill
Gov. Mike DeWine signs a bill legalizing earplug use by motorcyclists in a Feb. 21, 2020 ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse.
Among those who were at the Statehouse on Friday for a bill-signing ceremony was Jim Kennedy, a Seven Hills motorcycle enthusiast whose phone calls to the legislature prompted the bill. In an interview, he said he wore earplugs while riding for years, but didn’t realize they were illegal until a friend was cited.
“I just started contacting random state representatives until they returned my call,” he said.
A version of the bill was introduced during a previous legislative session, but didn’t move until this time around.
The bill was sponsored by state Rep. Riordan McClain, an Upper Sandusky Republican.
