Open Belt Drive for Electric Start Shovel?
Out of curiosity,
Is there anyone who makes a 3” open primary belt drive kit for electric start Shovelheads?
I know there’s the ones that are kick start only. And I’ve seen the thin ones that sit inside the stock closed primary case. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 2 or 3” open primary drive on an electric start shovel.

WITH SOME WORK, I FIT A 5 SPEED EVO TRANS ESSENTIALLY INTO A SHOVEL FRAME- FLH. USE PARTS OF BELT DRIVE- CONVERTED TO OPEN CHAIN DRIVE[ HAD TO GET RID THE FRONT HALF OF THE MOTOR BACKING PLATE[ THE DISTANCE BETWEEN CRANKSHAFT AND MAIN-SHAFT BECAME TOO SHORT. I HAVE AN ELECTRIC STARTER. COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITH PRESENT BELT DRIVE LENGTH, ALTHOUGH, I BELIEVE EVO FXR BELT DRIVE IS SHORTER, SO IS THE BACKING PLATE.
I THINK 4 BOLTS OR THE ENGINE CASE IN SHOVEL ARE THE SAME AS ON EVO. BELIEVE YOU CAN USE W/O ANY PROBLEMS 5 SPEED-6 SPEED EVO TRANSMISSION WITH SHOVEL= USE THE EVO PRIMARY OR BELT DRIVE WITH THE EVO STARTER SETUP.
YES I BELIEVE IT CAN BE DONE.
P.S. SHOVEL ENGINE PER SE.

that looks amazing man! thanks for the info. I think the last thing on my shovel is the open belt drive. I was told a few hours ago that BDL makes a 2" open primary drive kit for electric start 4speed shovels actually. guess the problem was where to place the starter solenoid? But I really like your exposed chain drive!!!
heres the link to that BDL kit: https://www.ebay.com/itm/BDL-open-be...a776%7Ciid%3A1

nice!
so, I would need to get a 5 speed starter that mounts to the bracket by clutch then? sounds simple enough.
is there a 3" option by any chance?

Go with 2.” It,s less bulky to the left and works just fine with any stroker. I was silly in the past to go with 4” belt drive before. Nonsense.
2” is plenty. Remember rear belt drives only 1.5 max, And they also hold up with strokers.
Here,s my 127- all the drive train is Ultima.

I will call my guy at BDL and see what our options are. They make a stadard backplate belt driver for a shovel too. What year tranny are you running? They have different length mainshafts so it has to match the tranny.

True! 2” looks great too. Does Ultima have a kit for a 4 speed shovel? or does it even matter?

I have a 4 speed Shovelhead with a 3 inch belt drive & a starter moror.... works great, not cheap but quality..... the Starter system was made bt a German company called CANONBALL & sold through the german company W&W..........here are a few pics of mine with it ......as you can see, it drives through the kick start assembly from the right side of the transmission with the motor mounted behind & hardly visiable, works great
