But whatever is your choice-is your bike.
I'm light and healthy, i ride with barely any padding- like 1/2-3/4" sick.
for the last bobber - i made from my kids foam playroom square's material, 1/2 " and 8-10 oz leather. initially it was sprang on the rigid, now it's solid as i suspended the bike.

Man, I love it! came out perfect ... Genius move using the foam! I wanted to do somthing like that but I found this Biltwell Thinline at a great price so I just went with that. I think its awesome and the foam padding isnt bad. but I have it mounted way too forward.
right now, its mounted using the universal chrome bolt on mount but its way too forward still...Ill have to weld one on later.

looks great! i like those arc rear fender supports too vs. the old vertical ones i used years ago.
i did a real short one on the hardass (rigid) bike with no rear fender supports, but the seat bolted to it for a little stability. however, you can see in the pic, it'd flex down a little bit.
the guy who bought it brought it back after getting a girlfriend to put a longer fender on it with the vertical supports, so she could ride. much preferred the original look. loved that bike.

man thats sweet! looks just like the el diablo WCC rear fender setup. I would have loved to do something like that on my softail but, I wanted it as close to the tire as I could. these bias tires expand much more so thats about as low as I could go with the fender without it scraping the fender somewhere down the road.

thanks, loved that thing. the way i always did a non-suspended fender was taping 2 lengths of 3/8" ID (I think?) oil hose around the tire, laid the fender on them, and that's where i'd mount it. it kept it pretty close, but still allowed the expansion you mention, and also clearance for rocks being picked up, which is what i was also concerned with.
Worst case is obviously a swelled tire WITH a rock stuck in the tread. for a swingarm mounted fender on a softail, you don't have to worry about passenger flex unless you have a passenger pad on it. However, for the hardass in my pic, part of the seat touched the fender, so my weight could also flex it downward.
