Best handling/tread life on a 200 rear tire?

Well, my Avon Am23 is nuked. It's a race tire that came on the rims when I got em. I'm in the market now for a good 200 and hoping to get some suggestions from the club. It's a 200 60 16 fwiw.

I've always ran metzlers I run a 16" 200 tire also. I do not have a speedo on my bike but I'm guessing about 10k. The tire I have on there know wore funny on me but I think its a balance issue. Most of the tire still has tread though the center but a portion is bald. This is my third metzler on this bike and the first that has wore like that. I have been thinking on trying something different just to do a comparison. Lot of guys will recommend Metzler but its like anything what works best for you.

I've been trying to read up on all my options. Seems like the Avon and Metz get good reviews but I wonder how much of that 250 bucks is going to flashy cobra symbols and such. I could care less how it looks, I want it to work!! Also, I've had mismatched tires (Dunlop and Avon) on the sled since I got it rolling. Is that a major no no?

Some say you should run matched tires I don't see where it makes a dif. I have never ran matched tires and have not seen any problems. They are all rubber and go round and round. Any 200 tire will run 200+ unless you luck up and find a helluva deal. I pay about 210 to 230 for my Metzlers.

A buddy of mine just had a 190 Dunlop put on his bike today it was 230.00 mounted and balanced out the door. That was a purdy could deal we thought . This Dunlop is suppose to be made up of a dual compound and is suppose to be good for 16K miles.

Don't get me wrong, I know it's gonna be a pretty penny. Anyone else want to chime in with pros and cons?

I'm at about 6K (and alot of burnouts) on my Avon Venom. It seems to be holding up pretty well.

the old yokohama tires had good grip and lasted forever. They're no longer in business but a company called Shinko tire bought theirplants and technology so I assume its the same tire. They have a 200 rated at 180mph for 200.00

Has anyone had experience with the cobra? Seems they disco'd the venoms. Thanks red I'll look into the shinkos too. As for profiles, how much of a difference if any will I see between different manufacturers. The rear fender was gapped for an Avon, would I run into issues mounting a different brand?

You can go on the websites and they have all the measurements for the tires. Avons are usually a lil taller.. Metzelers are different width, can't remember if it's wider or thinner. As far as what tire to run, I have an Avon on mine right now and will go for the Metzeler next time prob. The Dunlops are a harder rubber and you MIGHT get a little more time out of them but the Avons and Metzelers grip much better. I can't tell you how many guys I know that have swapped from the stock Dunlops on their Harley's to a Metzeler and say it's like a totally different bike. That being said Dunlop makes a new line called the E3 I think that has gotten pretty good reviews. Expensive though. Cheapest tire I have found is from motorcycle superstore .com Good luck man..

You want handling go Dunlop or Bridgestone (there's a reason all sport bikes run them). DO NOT do the H-D labeled Dunlops!!

You want mileage go Metz

Difficult to find that combo of both in a motorcycle tire.

I've burned through 4 metzler 880 210/50-17's in the last year and a half. found out they stopped making the 210 so i had to find a 200. while the 210 only offered the metz. the 200 series has a whole lot ta choices. as an experiment i went with a discount tire, full bore, it seems to handle as well, i only have a few miles on it but i figured in the cost of mounting vs miles and if i get at least 2,500 miles on it I'm saving money.

Had to.....

I had a Kawasaki Ninja putting out well over 160hp, did rolling burnouts a city block long all the fuckin time on that thing and would get 6000 miles out of a rear tire.
