Dude, it's painfull reading this thread. You have been told several times it's probably the starter. You don't need compression releases. You need a good strong starter and good strong battery.
Step 1: get battery tested
Step 2: get starter tested
My money is on the starter also.

This is what you need to do. All balls makes a good starter also.

My 1.4kw starter can somewhat turn over my brandnew 113 if I forget to hit the CRs. I have a yusa battery too. I'm betting on you have a bad starter too! Haven't you ever had one go bad in a car? Same symptoms. Armatures burned up, won't crank under a load. But spins fine on the bench.

Nope, I've never had a starter go out on me before... till now apparently. I was just trying different avenues before committing to changing out the starter in hopes of resolving the issue without really tearing into the bike (starter, comp. releases, etc.)
I guess I'm just not that lucky.... Im heading over to Jireh Cycles website to buy a starter

Just a heads up to anybody who's about to order an Ultima starter from Jireh, they're on backorder. Jennifer told me that they were supposed to get a shipment in July and still haven't received it yet so I cancelled my order and bought one off ebay. Im hoping it shows up this week!!
Punisher, I did end up redoing the coil wires just like the pic you posted.

Did you even get that new battery load tested?
If memory serves me, I had a similar issue with mine. It would not start without a jump, and even after swapping out the starter, it still wouldn't start. Turns out to be the battery. Granted the battery wasnt brand new like yours, but it was within a year.
Cant hurt. Batteries Plus can load test it for ya free.

I just had my battery crap out. I was driving down the freeway and the bike shut down. Got it restarted and headed to the gas station as I thought it was out of gas. Shut it off, put gas in it, and nothing.
The battery just crapped out. Put a new battery after trying to charge it for a while, and she fired right up and is charging fine.
You never know.

I'm curious to find out what you did. I have a "you don't need no stinking compression releases" Rev Tech 110. I went through the same stuff you have been through. New wires, New Spike starter, you name it. Mine would roll over when I hold the starter botton in and it makes it past the first stroke. If I forget to put it on the Battery Tender, I'll have to jump it with my cage or the jump box. The guy who owned it before me got it new in 2005, its a Raven Prowler, he has had starting problems sense new. I took the Spike off and put the original one on because the oil vent line wouldn't clear the end of the starter. Im giving it a make over right now. Paint, pipes, chrome, brakes, chrome, and did I mention CHROME!! Because I pulled the rocker boxs, to be rechromed, I went ahead and pulled the heads myself. I found a local shop to install a set of compression releases for 90 bucks! CRs included!! Well, i can't tell you yet if that solved my starting problem cause I have other problems that I'm working out. See "Belt Drive Alignment Problems". Getting close on that. Redwing and Barefoot Choppa Gave me some good, helpfull advice on my belt drive problem. Good luck! Oh, and sometimes, the bike will start up with no problems.

Two words: Milenko switch
I also ditched that Odyssey battery because it just didn't have the balls to crank this motor. I don't give a damn if they claim 545cca for 5 seconds, the stupid battery is only rated at 180cca and it SUCKS!! In addition, the Shumacher battery tender I have is total crap too. It claimed that my Interstate batt was fully charged but when I hooked up my Batt Tender Plus, it ended up only being about 80% so I left that tender on it for most of the day. I hooked it up to the bike and the first time I hit that starter button I got the dreaded "clunk". I hit the starter again and the motor started to turn over! Then one flick of the Milenko switch and BABOOM she fired right up!! I took her around the block a few times and she ran awesome.
The only thing I'm a little worried about is the switch being too weak to handle sustained power to the coils. It's a 16 amp switch... do you guys think it'll be alright?
