six speed conversion

Ok ive got an 88 modle flt tour glide. i know they make a gear set to convert the five speed intoba six but everyone is out of stock on these. heres my question can you put an 90 up gearset in these cases and just get away with changing the clutch basket. has anyone ever tackled anything like this before

yes you can update the tranny. I have done it on bikes to get away from the tapered spline mainshaft of higher HP bikes. We have done it by just changing the mainshaft and clutch hub. Its been a while since Ive done one but "i do not recall any big changes required to do the conversion

I have a 02 flhtci & a 2011 flhtcik the six speed is nice but unless you have trans problems with your 5 speed I'm not sure if it's worth the money to change it over

Thanks for the input. im sure the extra gear will help on the interstate. right now if i stay around 2500-2700 rpm i can maintain 44mpg. but when i get on the interstate and cruisin 70 & 80 the rpms are 3000 plus and the gas milage starts gettin in the 30's after that. if i can drop my rpm a little on the interstate im sure my milage should average back out.

Are you on the interstate that much and how many years will it take to off set a $2000.+ cost of a six speed trans.WHO buys a motorcycle and worries about gas mileage unless you're only getting 6or7 mpg

Unlike most the guys i know that have bikes use them to stop at the bars and thats it. i got one to rid ride the hell out of it. Most of my rides are usualy 3-400 miles sometimes more in one day. and yes i am concerned of the gas milage. cause the shit aint gettin cheaper...lol

I'll bet you could go to ebay and find a complete 6spd. trans for less than swapping the gear set in your 5 spd.
Then you would have a 5 spd. to either sale, or keep as a spare.

So far the only cheap overdrive is just the gear set for 700.. And every vender i have talked to is out of stock on them..thats the reason for starting this thread. not many people seem to carry primary and tranny goodies for this year tranny..... but again thanks for everyones input

Just remember you get what you pay for! My buddy works @ the local H-D shop only uses screaming eagle 6 speed sets and highly recomends them over all the others Baker would be the next. I still would rethink this upgrade on a bike that old

I dont even know if they make screkin eagle gear sets for these old things. but im willin to check outall possibilities.. whats the difference between an old 80" evo and say like a newer 96" evo fitment into an older frame . i know the trannies bolt different. but are the engines taller . wider exc. might just do an engine and tranny swap. id like to have the fuel injection anyway

The SE stuff is prolly only available for the newer bikes and in my opinion the Jims stuff isnt worth the money. They make the SE gearsets and I have seen bikes that really get rode like you do have issues with the SE stuff after some real miles. If you spend the big bucks get the Baker. If not any import will work and you might as well buy the cheapest one as they are all very similar in quality
