wiring question

Gentlemen

I've been mocking up my wiring harness (from scooters) and have a question. All the diagrams I see on this site, and comments, all point to a wire from the Voltage Regulator going to the positive terminal on the battery, either with an inline 30A CB or without. However, in my Buell manual (I'm using a Buell engine) and my HD manual, all the wiring diagrams have the wire from the VR going to the 30A CB but then to the starter (same terminal as the main heavy gauge wire from battery to starter), not direct to the battery.

Does it make any difference which way you do it? Is one better than the other?

Thanks gents

it makes no diferance fella...It's how I did it on my M2 build last year....it means you can cut down on the wiring a bit more.......the battery to starter + lead will act as a mainfeed to the battery from the Regulator just fine.....

A good rule for power net is no daisy chain.
Going to the Ign Switch adds in one more possible fail point.

seeing how most alts put out 24 amps its a bit ridiculous putting in a 30 amp fuse If you're going to fuse it (I never have) use a fuse lower than the alt output.

Apparently, wiring isn't his strong suit...

the fuse is a safety... it should be rated slightly over the charging system output... this is for spikes or if the voltage regulator bus bar failure.. if it comtinues to over charge the battery it can blow the fuse... as to many amps going thru the fuse... I run a maxi fuse 30 amp... the curicut breaker will work but some times that fail easy & you never know to reset it..unless you go with the auto rest type.... I have a charging light set up on my bike .. it lets you know if it not charging & if it over charges... I know a guy that was building them...not sure if he does any longer..I had a video of its operation.. I'll see if I can find it..

alright I'm no video expert but here is all I have... click on the pict

the light will also turn on if it over charges... around 15vdc or something...
but it lets you know if its not charging or over charging..you could mount the light most anywhere

I'm no electrical expert, but the 30a is for starter motor use. If you are going to kick start only, a 15a is fine for lights and the main.

When you start an engine, there is no amp per say out of the stator that low a crank meaning. So, is not the fuse used for the battery output? There is no fuse that is going break as the vol/reg begins to overcharge the battery, right?

If a wire shorts to ground, there goes your battery amp draw past 15a? So your fuse blows before you smoke the wire harness?
