Overflow issues after rebuild...
Hey all,
Been having some overflow issues with my CV carb on my 99' softail. I just finished with my first rebuild and it was certainly an experience and a half. Would like to take a moment to thank all of you on this board. I dont post much but I am a daily reader. Your guys information was a huge part of my rebuild after I took the time to mess something up!!
I took the carb bowl off and took the float off and noticed a piece of rubber debris in the inlet valve where the float goes in. I removed it with a pair of tweezers and place the float back in, it still sits at the level the manual says it should. I place the carb on and hook up the fuel line to see if it overflows, turn fuel on wait and wait and no overflow. Im feeling accomplished and wanting to beat on my chest so I put the air cleaner back on get everything tightened up. Pull the bike off the lift go to turn the fuel on and boom starts to overflow again. Now Im getting pissed and dying to ride, so I take it for a cruise and notice its not overflowing while im riding but every time I stop at a light it starts dumping. During the rebuild I switched to some SHORT 2 into 1 pipes, the pipes before were basically drag pipes. Also switched out the air cleaner for a wimmer 90 degree air cleaner. I didnt swap out any jets on the carb but im not even sure if that would lead to an overflow issue??? Bike seems to run great while im riding but cant seem to figure out this issue.
Sorry for the long winded post, any ideas or opinions would be greatly appreciated!!
Also how do I post pics so I can show my limited knowledge and be judged!!
Thanks to John from Scooters, he came through as promised on here! Stand up guy with excellent customer service!

^ Yep, I agree with Amwag...Take it out and ride it Hard if it's got trash in the bowl you might be able to suck it through..if not, take it back off and clean it again.

sounds like that rubber may have been the valve seat rubber. pull the bowl and there should be a little rubber tip on the end of the valve.

First off make sure that your petcock is working properly then make sure that your gas tank isn't building up allot of pressure. I agree with Red, take a good look at the needle, you may even want to replace the needle no matter what. As far as the seat goes, that's part of the body of the carb on a CV, what I do is look at it with a magnifying glass and I "resurface" the seat by twisting a pencil eraser in it(works really nice), after your done clean and blow out all of your passages.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, the little rubber pointed tip is still on the valve. It did not appear to be damaged. I took the bike out this morning and it didnt overflow to start with, but after riding it maybe 10 or 15 miles it started again. Then I stopped to get gas about 20 or so miles from my house and it stopped overflowing????? I guess I will have to pull the carb off again today to try the above suggestions. Thanks again for the info!

If you changed needle seat, make sure its identical to the old one. I've seen this on a rebuild kit on a older cv carb, the needles had differences where the new needle would not seat completely. Put the old one back in and solved the problem.

I took boogey's advice to go out and get on it hard to see if it would suck up any other debris. I am thinking that it kind of solved my situation and possibly just cleaned out anything that was left because it has not overflowed since. Hopefully it stays that way!! Thanks again for all the advice!!!
