Help - Carburetor?

Hi all,

the last 3 or 4 times I've left the house, the bike sputters and back fires for about a 1/2 mile then all is fine for the entire evening. The next day, same thing happens. I'm thinking something's going on in the S&S carb, but not sure. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for you help!

Chris

Wow, that could be allot of things, could be your fuel, I would check or change the plugs, also see if the problem improves/worsens with more or less choke/enrichener, it could be the beginings of a leaky needle and seat or your intake seals could be starting to leak and they seal up with a little heat. Is the backfire out the carb or the exhaust? As a rule of thumb if it's banging out of the exhaust it's rich, if it's coming out of the carb you're lean.

I re-fueld several times since this started happening. I always use hi-octane gas (93). I also checked the plugs and they are a nice amber color. I haven't checked playing with the choke while this happens. If the intake seals were starting to leak, wouldn't this sputterin/backfiring always be there? Like I said, it happens for about a 1/2 mile as soon as I leav the house. I give it high throttle for about a 1/2 mile and everything is fine for the enire rest of the evening which is many stops at local watering holes and such. It runs liek a charm all evening. Then the next day, go to leave the house and same exact thing for a bout a 1/2 mile. I think the backfire is out the exhaust.

Sounds like an atomization change [warming up] in the heads? Different mornings are the ambient temps? Sometimes and sometimes not like you said. Like you said, it should happen each time for electrics or fuel.

are you warming the engine up before riding or just firing it up & taking off... thay tend to run better after warm....& its best to warm it up 1st.. prevents base gaskets from blowing out...

Yes, I always warm it up before I take off. The problem ended up being I was using the choke and don't need to be on these warmer days. It was unburnt fuel in the exhaust. Thanks for all your replies.

Your S&S is as reliable as any of the others and will run just as well....Use the enrichener just to fire it up then shut it off and use the throttle for warm up...

I have a CV on one bike, an S&S on another, and a Mikuni on another. The Mikuni is my favorite, then the CV, and then the S&S...however...I would never spend the money on a new Mikuni to replace a perfectly good S&S, not that much of a difference in performance to warrant the expenditure. The best deal if you need a carb and are pinchin' pennies is to buy a used CV for $75, they're everywhere and you can't go wrong with one of them.

A quick way to eliminate an intake leak probability is to fire it up, let it idle, spray brake clean around the intake manifold where it seals to the heads and the carb. If the engine starts to die, it's an intake leak.
