Question Gas On The Ground

have an s&s carb. e series that wants to leak gas out the overflow tube when shut off.
no pattern as to when. will go for a period of time with no leak. only way to prevent is to shut off petcock. no leak while running. shutting off the petcock is not a fix. change the needle but not the seat. adjusted the float as well. only way for the bowl to overfill is for the float not to move the needle to a full seal . what am i missing?

check the seat for any grooves.. also did the boal have any trash in there when you 1st drained it... check the petcock screen for debris.. any trash or debris can cause the float to get stuck...also did you check the float for any leaks.. if it has a pin hole, it can fill with fuel & wont float right..

float looked good. no grooves seen. petcock/screen is new. tank flush when i took heads off to put in compression release valves. might replace seat and float to cover more options. never had problem till heads were off and carb was on the bench for a few days. have sinse pulled carb off and cleaned and checked. compression release valves took care of the starter grind that was big time embarrassing and now have moved on to a gas pudddle!!

If it just leaks some and then stops by itself try lowering the float level a little. I doubt that the needle isn't seating, If the level in the bowl is a little high when you tun the bike off the heat from the engine makes the gas in the carb expand and overflow.

If it doesn't stop leaking when it happens, you need to drain the bowl maybe open the petcock and let if flow a little to clean the seat and install a inline filter.

You said you had the heads off so I'm guessing you had the gas tank off. Make sure that your tank vent isn't blocked or pinched, a quick way to check to see if it's a tank venting problem is to park the bike with the gas cap off(or loose) and the petcock open, if it doesn't overflow, you have a gas tank vent problem.

I have the same problem with my 03 Texas Chopper (S&S Super G), I have tried adjusting the float, needle and seat look good. My Sergeant at work has an 04 Texas Chopper with the same problem. Its doesn't leak a lot but you can always smell gas in the garage. I have just learned to live with it.

I had the exact same problem with my 2004 Tx Chopper. I pulled the carb off the bike, dropped the bowl, pulled out the float and needle assembly completely. I used a liberal amount of carb cleaner (spray can), on every component.

I reinstalled the float assembly. But before I bolted the bowl back onto the carb, I did a test. I filled the bowl with gas, watched the float rise and made sure that the needle was properly seating. I pushed the float up and down in the gas a few times to make sure that it was working consistently.

I bolted it back together and re-installed the carb. While I had the tank empty, I rebuilt the infamous sticking Golan petcock that was on the bike and I cleaned the fuel filter.

I have not had a leak since.
