82 sporty blew oil cap off....

ive been wrenchin on 82 sporty..... thought it was running great then it popped off chrome oil cover blew oil all over me....what the hell caused it and how do i fix it>>

maybe over filled I had that happen before . topped off tank but theres oil in thee bottom end

its sat for a 2 yrs... guy just changed oil when he parked it(wouldnt let me change it yet!!)
runs good with CV carb on it just need to dial it in..
