Electrical question
Hey guys! I am brand new to this site and haven't had the time to look around much. I own a small shop in Russellville Ar and have a customers bike in here for some additions. He is wanting indicator lights, neutral indicator, blinkers, oil pressure, high beam, speedometer, tach etc. I have all the parts, I just can't seem to figure out which wires go down to the oil pressure switch or the neutral switch. This bike has a wire on the oil pressure switch but no light, also has wiring to the neutral switch but also no indicator. There are two unused connectors under th tank but all I can locate is the hi/low beam, left and right signals. Any help would be appreciated. I really don't want to run new wires OR pull the electrical panel under the fender to figure this out. Hey ... if I have to I suppose Iwill but am hoping some one here can steer me quickly in the right direction. Thanks to all.

well we will need to know what your working on & what you already have on the bike for wiring... we need some kind of idea.. the oil pressure switch is just a grounded switch... so if you apply power to the light the oil pressure switch will apply a ground if pressure falls below 3 psi usually... once the oil pressure builds above 3 psi the ground is broken & the indicator light will go out...

The bike is an 03 Iron Horse. The bike has had all of the indicators removed at some time in its past. The curren owner wants them reinstalled (speedometer, tachaometer, turn signals, oil pressure light, neutral light. The bike already has the oil switch wired and it also already has a speedometer sensor on the drive sprocket. I found two unused wiring female connectors under th tank that have the turn signals and high beam butnot the speedomet or the oil pressure switch. There are also three wires terminated under the tank, an orange, blue and a black. The orange and blue are hot when the key is in the on position and the black is grounded. The oil pressure wire and the speedo wire go into a "wad" of wires under the battery. I guess what i am looking fo is someone to help me figure out an easy spot to look for the end of these wires that USED to go to the speedo and oil light, or at least what color I should be looking for. Sorry i'm not more clear. I kow how to ake all of this work but was/am hoping to utilize wiring that is already there.

The neutral and oil switch provides the ground for the circuit. When hooking to the bulb you would supply a common hot to the indicator and then take the ground (from the switch wires) to close the circuit.
The high beam indicator wire supplies the hot, as well as the turn signals iirc. As for the speedo, what brand is the display and what does the sending unit on the wheel side look like?

Thanks guys but I think I'm just going to have to run some new wires. I understand how all this works I was just wondering if anyone knew WHERE the wiring from the neutral switch came out up front under the tank. Same thing for the oil pressure switch. I understand all they need is a hot to the light and they complete the ground circuit through the switch. I was hoping not to have to run new wiring OR pull the "wad" of wires out from under the oil tank to sort this out. I have found two hot wires under the tank that aren't hooked to anything, if I could only locate the corresponding grounds to each of these switches. Have a good day guys. Twisted Grip

Each bike is gonna be different I'm afraid, when I wired my pan I ran just enough wire to reach where it needed to go. Sounds like you have a multi meter, best bet is to start checking continuity on wires you can find. I would assume that the only unused wires would go to the parts that were removed, so if you have a known wad down by the oil tank, they'll be in there somewhere.
I can get into my wiring diagram and atleast tell you what colors they are supposed to be, but if the builder didn't follow hd color schemes, who knows if it will help.
I'm sure it's a royal pain but the RIGHT way to do it would be utilizing the wires that are there, if something craps out down the road troubleshooting could be a nightmare with two different bundles of wires.
