Help with Ultima starter and Bullitt Proof Jackshaft

Allright....I have a Ultima open belt drive and ultima 2.0 starter. This is my first build so be easy.. I have read up on the problems with jackshaft and binding and alignment. therefore I purchased the jackshaft "fix" from John at Scooters. I wish I could say I know what it is supposed to operate like cuz it doesn't seem "right" to me on my bike. I installed with no shims and with the starter/belt drive cover off. When I push the starter button in I can push the shaft out but it hits the ring gear on the drive. It will not engage the teeth. I can pull it out and wiggle it up on the gears. when letting go of the shaft but with the starter button still pushed in the shaft stays in place on the gear. Once I let go of the button it will start to retract but hangs on the teeth...It takes a decent push with the thumb but it then will release. .If I let go of the button and just hold the shaft out with my hands it will most times retract off the gears on its own. Before I start to figure out alignment stuff I want to know is this the way it "should" be? Shouldn't i be able to push the starter button in and have the gears engage? or is it normal to have to lift and wiggle it to get it up on the gear? Thanks for anyhelp anybody can provide. BTW the battery is not hooked up and when fully pulled out the jackshaft covers approx 3/4 of the gear...

You may have to put the cover on the shaft it rides in the bushing and will help with alignment. Put some grease in the bushing. I forget what the measurement is from gear to gear. I'm sure John will help you out with this.

sticking on the ring gear and not retracting is quite normal if the motor is not turning,it needs the motor to turn to push the jack back in....it's why it's a helical cut gear.
and unless the jack shaft is spinning it also won't engage easily....there is a ''lead'' on the gear that help it engage when it's spinning.also having the end cover and bush in place helps.

Mine does about the same thing, Ultima states when you put the end cover on pry up on it when you tighten it down. I noticed too when you pull the gear out onto the ring gear it may not snap back in, if you roll your belt a tad bit, the gear immediately returns back in. Mine too covers about 3/4 or a little more. I tell you this fix is the only way to go. When I first installed my belt drive and starter i swear 90% of the time it would grind! makes you wonder how they even sell it as operational functioning product. The Jack shaft fix completely fixed it, has yet to grind once. on another note: I did however have to drill out the inside of the cover deeper, at first install the jackshaft would not throw all the way out and the gear was only engaging only about half the ring gear.

not to highjack the thread, but im having the same issues. I just picked up a softail with an 127" Ultima, Ultima 6 speed and Ultima 3.35" primary and it has been grinding since day one. I picked up the "fix" from Scooter's, but it still grinds more than it doesnt. Ive tried loosening up the starter and attempting to get the alignment right but nothing seems to do the trick. Any suggestions?

more often than not,I have found the grinding is a symptom of the starter clutch going south....they are a weak link in the starter train......I had to change 3 on my buddys 127 Proof SMW motor before we found a quality starter clutch to fit... after it worked fine with no grinding or anything bad going on....a new starter clutch is a shit load cheaper than a new starter as well!!....

Alright...i did the alignment as best i could. The jackshaft bolt seems to make some difference based on tightness. Its as loose as possible. Put some red loctite on the bolt and anti seize on the cover so we shall see. Just buttoning everything up on the bike so it won't be long till i find out if I'm good or not

I've tried it with the washer and without, same result. Sometimes the starter engages the ring gear, sometimes it doesn't.
