G-day from down under, if you put the gear box into 3rd then center the spawl screw should all be good. best way is take top off the box and watch how it all works, nothing will pop out at you when the top is taken off just be carefull. also if you just move the adjuster screw out about a mil if you move to much it will over adjust. good luck mate.

Put it in third gear and loosen the shift pawl lock nut. Then turn the adjustment rod (with an Allen wrench) either way until the shift lever (on the transmission) moves an equal distance forward and back before encountering any resistance. It only takes turning the shift rod a very little bit (one way or the other) to get it centered up. You can do it without removing the top lid on the transmission, but you might need to cut down an Allen wrench to make it fit behind the motor plate.
The below further explains things.

I'd give it a good look for some binding with the shifter.
After it has been determined that there is absolutely no binding with the shifter in both forward and rearward positions,
Only then would I start to mess with the pawl adjustment.
