Worn Chain or Sprocket?

OK, I have about 8000 miles on my bike....this is my only street bike ever with a chain. I have a 48 tooth Performance Machine aluminum sprocket. I have a 530 O-ring chain.

Over time I have had to adjust the rear axle back about a half-inch. It is basically at the end of its travel and I am wondering what to do. I see some wear on the sprocket, but I am not sure if it is completely what is causing this or if somehow the chain needs replaced.

How can I determine if the sprocket needs replaced due to wear or if I need a new chain? Seems like the chain should last way longer than an aluminum sprocket......but I cannot tell how to measure the sprocket to determine if it is that or the chain.

Suggestions on how I can get to the bottom of this?

If the teeth are sharp or rolled over replace the sprocket. Hold the chain straight out in 1 hand just as its mounted on the sprockets but sideways, if it curves down more than 1" overall, replace it. If it doesn't drop that much remove a link and reinstall it.

While I agree with Red on the "Hold the chain straight out in 1 hand just as its mounted on the sprockets but sideways, if it curves down more than 1" overall, replace it." there's more to it than that, especially with an o-ring chain. You mentioned seeing wear on the sprockets...anything like this?

One side of the sprocket having chips or rolled over edges like this is caused by damaged or missing o-rings.

And of course if the sprockets are hooked just changing the chain is a recipe for disaster.

If you're seeing these things you're better off replacing all three, (chain and both sprockets). A couple hundred bucks beats the hell out of replacing a primary and/or lower cases. (don't ask)

Well, here is what my situation looks like......so what do you think?!??!?

Chain looks pretty good....[IMG][/IMG]

Sprocket shows some wear at tips and on inside...
[IMG][/IMG]

The sprocket has wear.....see the teeth just to the left and just to the right of center.....slight "hook" to them, but not sure if this is excessive or if this is OK. Thoughts?[IMG][/IMG]

I would suggest replacing the sprocket with a steel sprocket.

Damn, you should frame that stuff and hang it on the wall, I never seen one that bad.

I was thinking the same thing, Red! Why do all these sprocket mfgs make aluminium sprockets? Just cheap and easy to make maybe?

Pitbull, when I originally did the alignment of my tranny/final drive sprockets, the straight edge seemed to be maybe 1/16 out of true......if memory serves me. That was close to 10 years ago, so who knows how good my memory is since then......which is just SHIT, I tell ya!!!! Is 1/16 going to be excessive? The chain looks pretty good to me and I don't feel the sprocket wear on that inside seems to be too bad either.

BTW..... PMP Sprockets was quoting me like $90 and Rebel Gears quoted me $75 for a knock-off of the PM Villain sprocket (530 chain and 48 teeth). That is a SHIT LOAD better than the $200 PM quote I got.
