That's the classic symptom of a worn out battery

I know you said that the battery is good, but I'd bet that if you had it load tested at a shop - they'd tell you it was shot

Theres nothing "good" about H-D's choice of starter/solenoid/relay in 87. However I'd bet you're trying to push all those amps through the original cables which are now 23 years old. If your "good" means that the things you stated are "new"? thats a good thing. ANY starter's only gonna be as good as the battery and cabling behind it. Also rubber mounts are notorious for shitty grounds. Its the nature of the chassis. You might want to add a dedicated ground strap from the battery's negative post to a starter mounting bolt. Just my .02 TK.

Thats my prob , newer cable's,have a ground to the starter , and even with the starter disconected I have a 3V drop, battery checks good on a load tester and voltage at the battery doesnt drop ,and there is no voltage drop to the hot side of the solanoid either.
in numorous places I can put the ol volt meter have my 11.9-12.4V depending on how long I have been playing around with , then push the ol start button and whammO 8.8V , I was thinking ground re-did the relay ground and ck'd for draw/drops on the batt ground . Might just end up ripping it all out and starting over yet I would preffer to find and fix the issiue.Did find a wire diagram for $20 that I hope to have in a few days ,that I would be happy to post or Email if it would help anybody. yet again any input or ideas are helpfull
