gas tank fittings
The chop is coming along nicely but i have run into one big problem. I cant find fittings for my cross over line on my tank. i have looked every where and i do mean every where i can drive to and take the tank to find the fittings.
90 deg hose barb withe the threaded end being 3/16 npt
i do have a clearance issue between the tank and rear head so i need the smallest elbow i can get does anyone know who sells them?
i have tried autozone, advance, lowes, 5 local hardware stores, 2 plumbing supply shops, fastenall, and a fluid power hydraulic shop. and they all say no but they can get then in 1/4 or 1/8.

You could try a street L fitting. They are much tighter but 3/16 might be a tough find. A street L is a real tight fitting witrh a threaded 90 hole for a stright hose barb fitting to screw into. Drag sells them for larger sizes you might try Gardner Wescott....Thats prolly who makes the ones the sell

Are you sure about that thread size?
Never heard of 3/16 NPT.
How did you arrive at that size?

Try ace hardware but they will be brass. They have street ells with hose barbs and pipe to pipe also. That sounds like a fitting for an ice maker on the refrigerator so that may be your best bet. Is this a crossover your putting in?

Get two steel barb fittings, cut two holes in the tank, and weld at the desired depth. done.

How did i arrive at this size fitting?
i took the tank to a local hardware store pulled a straight hose barb with a 3/16 threaded end and it threaded right in just like it should. Now it could be a possibility that another size barb say 1/8 was dropped in the wrong box at the hardware store.
yes its for the cross over line at the rear of the tank. its actually the tanks that (yup you guessed it) demons cycle sells. i sent them an email asking if they had any fittings for it or if they could specify the actual size of the bungs or fittings they use, and all i get is a response that they just go to their local hardware store and grab a hand full of em.
i could cut out the bungs and weld in new ones but the tank is all painted and ready to go.
i could plug these holes with a screw in plug since the top of the tank is not welded to the tunnel internally allowing some gas to crossover inside the tank and the petcock is at a higher level than the cross over bungs ,but then im back to square one. Finding something to screw in the holes so it wont leak.
it never fails i get so close to getting it done then cant find what i need. just got my vin# today and the gas tank and ignition is the only thing stopping me from being wind.

Well that and the fact that it is 16°F.. wow.. lol. It's cool man we all have these hiccups along the way it gives you time to go back and check the torque on all fasteners and double, triple check everything else. I feel your pain though man, I'm sitting and staring at mine waiting on a new starter..

Yea you aint kidding there i cant goto the fridge without having to turn the light on in the den so i dont fall over the bike. Surfing the web and tweakin on the bike till its time to go back to work. still have some wiring to do and need to cut a link out of the chain, brake lines and throttle cables, and a few other little oddball stuff. I just wanna hear this bitch fire up and at least ride around the yard till i get frostbite.

When you say 3/16 I'm assuming that is the hose barb size.
A more common size thread for the crossover is 1/8 pipe.

How about a photo of what you have going on under that tank.

My Fatkatz tank had 3/8-24 straight thread bungs for the crossover. I almost confused them with 1/8 pipe. The crossover used banjo fittings, very compact.

finally found something had to use a 3/16 - 1/8 compression fitting. the 3/16 part is the threaded portion that goes in the tank, the 1/8 part is the hose size. Now to make a spacer to put between the tank and mount to get the fitting off the engine.

the standard thread size for crossover fittings is 1/8"-27. I use a straight bung welded in and then you can either use a right angle fitting for an oil tank or just the crossover line with the fittings on the ends....

You had good advise earlier from Pushrod. A street elbow is an elbow that has male threads on one end and female threads on the other. A standard elbow has female threads on both ends.
Often the street elbow can be used with and sort of fitting that you need in the female hole. The standard elbow can use a "close nipple" to make the elbow similar to the street elbow.
Hopefully you are going to have some more space under the elbows pictured. If the fittings hit the frame it is only a matter of time before the tank will fracture and leak from vibration impact.
