BDL clutch problem
I am running an Ultima 113 with a regular 3" BDL open belt drive. After a few burn-outs, and drag racing ( okay maybe more than a few ) I have pretty much toasted the clutch. I think there is a retro fit clutch for this belt drive that is stronger and was wondering if anyone has tried it and how much $$. Any help is appreciated.

Is it slipping? Have you tried more spring pressure? Have you been to BDL website? They have shouldered bolts with different spacers and some adjustability, contrary to popular beliefs.
Friday and Mondays are busy for them but at least talk to their tech guy.

Yes, the clutch is slipping pretty bad. I have adjusted it as much as I can and now have the as much pressure as I can put on it. I have been to BDL's website and that is where I saw a retro-fit clutch for the one I have. I'll give them a call Tuesday and see what they can do. Thanks for the reply.

Take it apart and de-glaze it with sandpaper on both the friction disks and the steel plates, clean it good with break cleaner and put it back on. If it still slips you can add an extra disk on the end, add washers to the springs to increase pressure.
I've put some lapping compound on the disks before reinstalling them before, if I knew I was gonna be pushing it hard later in the day. Once they slip it's time to take them apart and fix them....

BDL's new Ball Bearing Lock Up Pressure Plate works well
Barnett makes a good set of replacement frictions and steels

I took it apart again tonight and did sanded the disks and plates ( 2nd time ) and it is a little better. I was thinking about going with the lock up clutch. I haven't personally seen the new ball bearing pressure plate. Does anyone know what the price of these run? Which one is better? Thanks for the help.

For your BDL 3", the BDL Ball Bearing Lock Up Pressure Plate is a better set up than the lock up plate with actuator arms - around $225
If you're going to take your clutch apart to replace the pressure plate, you might as well replace the frictions and steels. They're only $100 or so, and trying to bring back the old frictions after they've started to slip is pissin' in the wind, IMO
Keep in mind that all of the lock up pressure plates are RPM dependent - they grab more as the revs increase

I went with the BDL ball bearing clutch and I am running it with a hydraulic clutch and an S&S 113". I had some slippage during times of increased rpm takeoffs. So I tore down the clutch and went with the heavier diaphragm spring and substituted 8 steel bearings with 8 carbide balls. I also installed new BDL friction plates and steels. Sad to say I still get the slippage at the higher rpm takeoffs. In fact, after such a takeoff the plates will not even engage until they cool off. It is like the clutch is filled with grease. I am wondering if the Barnett friction plates and steels would do better with this ball bearing clutch? Any advice?

Has anyone else had similar slipping problems with the BDL ball bearing clutch?

The Barnett clutch plates were an improvement in my BDL
I have foot clutch and vastly improved the engagement.
