Ultima Digital Ignition, P/N 53-644

I have question about the Ultima Digital Ignition, PN 53-644. I have heard that Ultima ignitions are crap. I just recieved my 113 Ultima from Southern Motorcycle. It came with this ignition. I dod not even see it on the Midwest website.

Is it any good? Is there something I should know when timing the motor?

I know there are several threads about timeing but this is a new ignition and I not familiar with it.

Thanks

Does it have any buttons on it or is it pre-set??

I think Mr Scary has a couple of pictures..

I have the one that is pre-set and there is no buttons on it but I don't remember what the part number was.

Are you talking about Southern Motorcycle works?

If so, they run then before shipping.

I would be confident that it's already timed. Give them a call and find out.

I wouldn't try to change it.

The ignition you need to be concerned with is part# 53-60 and 53-61. These were discontinued because people were having too many problems with them and returning them to distributors. The 53-644 is the same one I have pre-installed on my 113" and I believe Silverhorse has the same one, here is a pic

Frank would I be safe to assume that mine would also be timed since I ordered mine pre-run?

Did you get it from SMW?

Regardless of who built the engine, I would always check it.

I'm not saying loosen the standoffs and play wax on wax off with the ignition.

I'm sayin, fire it up and check the timing.

Scary...you are correct..it was pre-run and time so I was told. I just had some doubt since the carb was not installed and there did not seem to have any oil leaking anyplace.

I have the similar to ronbob with the same model numbers but has some adjustments on the top. I will post a pic.

My only concern is all the piston slap I head about. TRYING TO AVOID THAT!

Member Rhode Warrior has that ignition. (maybe not that same model...Not sure)

But his ignition was set from the factory. He static timed it and it was right at 26 advance.

Frank I got mine from Jireh. Let's not make a big deal of that since we know there is already a thread going on that issue LOL

Dip switches?

They are set according to the advance need of the particular engine.

How do you know it was pre run? Jireh doesn't build them, so it came right from MidWest.

Last I knew, Ultima didn't pre run them.

Things could have changed.

Ultima will pre-run upon request, the 53-60 and 61 were discontinued because of problems. they were replaced with the 53-660 which have the dip switches on them. the 53-644 is the pre-set ignition that comes with the motors or you can purchase them seperate, just whoever you buy it from has to contact ultima to get the right curves set.

See those Dip switches at the top right?

Those are set to the particular engine. That's your advance.

Once those are set, static timing is all that's needed.

Still couldn't hurt to throw a light on it after you fire it up.

I personally would be confident about it, coming from SMW.
