Building first bike on a budget which engine would be better to use a hd crate or ultima the type of engine would be a 80 evo.
hd dosent come with carb and there is about a 700.00 difference in price

Well my .02 cents would be that if you buy the HD your going to need to buy a carb for it and it's going to run around 400 bucks??
The HD may be the best for longevity. However the Ultima will perform a little better for you..
I have an Ultima and don't have any problems with it..

Well the HD motor will be known for the most reliable but the performace to me isn't worth the savings.

HD=reliable. As stated you will need a carb and ignition (about 600-$800 Depending on type). I have seen them as low as $2900.
Ultima=power. I have heard great things if tuned properly. Check out Scooters...he has some great deals.
If you plan on running a 6 speed, the 80 inch evo is useless. It will not have enough balls to spin 6th with any authority.

out of the box the ultima is gonna be alot hotter motor. mikuni carb(good or bad).
but personally for an 80 incher, i would run a harley motor. the things are hard to beat...and an S&S carb and mild cam will wake one up nicely. in the long run parts are easy to get in most any town....etc.
any other size and i would go aftermarket right off the bat, but with an 80 incher? harley.

Seems the 80" H-D motor is the "350 Chevy" of Harleys.Very dependable, respond to mods.,,parts are "a dime a dozen" and can be gotten anywhere. Can be bought for 2700$ shipped.Add a NICE Hi-4 for 300-400 (on the bay),and a carb from the bay for about 100,you have a decent "plug-and-play" motor/set your timing-possible slow jet change (very easy on CV),and you're good-to go w/no "tweaking".Plenty of torque for a chopper/build that is about 100lbs.lighter.
If your wanting more balls,go on and get a 103-107" Ultima for about 600-1000$ more, and it will have carb.and ign.Opinions on motors are as different as the riders.Strokers/hot-rods are a blast, had them and ran them years ago.But the tweaking and repairs snowball later...........

HD Evos last forever... Mine is out of a 91' Heritage (one of the early ones) with a mild cam, Mikuni carb, Thunderheader, SE air cleaner w/about 14k miles on it and it starts and runs great all the time.
I don't even use the choke on it.
And mine is one of the earlier ones, so they're even better now.

Honestly bro if you say you're on a budget build than buy the HD. Here are some things to think about. I don't know about you but for me I would rather spend the extra 7 or 8 hundred bucks on a kick ass open belt. Also the HD motor is bullet proof. Add a cam maybe and Andrews EV45 with EZ install pushrods and she will definitely wake up. Don't get me wrong the ULTIMA motors are good for the $$ but you did say this is a budget build right? The new ULTIMA open belt drives run about $700.00 bucks coincidentally!! Also I wouldn't worry about the carb. I have found so many awesome deals on leftover or used S&S carbs on Ebay it's not even funny. Just some things to think about!---Drew

ps - i got a screamin eagle ignition (made by Crane and same as the HI-4) for like 90 bucks. got a used carb for 50 bucks. a can of carb cleaner and a few new jets and seals and called it a day.
2700 for stocker plus 200-300 for used parts or god parts-hunting and you are in a good shape.
could also consider finding a used donor bike for similar costs and then you have wheels, frame (to chop/etc), brakes, etc etc for the same price

I would get the HD Evo motor because if you ever need a mechanic to work on it...an HD mechanic is much more likely to do the work on an EVO then they would an Ultima..

An evo crate motor and an Ultima are like apples and oranges. Treat it decent and the evo is good for 100,000 miles. I doubt the Ultima would last anywhere near that but for maye $600 more you could get a 100,107 or113 and it'll be twice as fast. Of course more power means more wear on everything else too!
Another thought, I think you can get a grey Twin Cam A crate motor for $500-$600 more than an evo and use an adaptor to fit an evo frame.

I'm struggling with the same thought....if I get a 80" HD + carb + cams + ignition than is not really cheaper than the Ultima. Plus, I heard a good thing about the ultima from this forum...so I still can't decide

It boils down to what you want:
Performance and pretty reliable?
Cheap and very reliable?
