Primary oil

2 quick questions.

Closed Primary (on a bigdog). What kind of oil - I've always heard that you can use the same oil as for the motor (I'm running Mobil 1 syth.

Second - how much? The way I understand the books is to fill to the bottom of the inspection plate while the bike is level. This will cause oil to be past teh bottom while on it's kickstand. But seems like it should hold the fluid since it is gasketed same as the primary cover.

Thanks - and sorry for being such a dumbass.

theres a bright metal ring around the outboard side of the clutch hub....right where it turns the corner and goes in toward the chain.

should barely touch that standing up straight

motor oil was run for years...then they say primary oil only....now again they make a oil to put in everything

either get primary oil or some 40 or 50 weight...i wouldnt waste the mobil to lube a chain

Gypsy - your the man. Thanks for the quick reply. Understanding that you wouldn't waste the Mobil - if that's what I got - is it good to use?

I have a Primo clutch off a Big Dog, and I got lots of clutch drag (not releasing, hard to find neutral and creeping) using 'primary lube' (very thick). Primo told me to use only ATF (very thin) and it works great. Auto trans are full of chains and clutch packs.
Walmart has ATF by the gallon really cheap.

The old days when engine oil was curculated through the primary made for crappy clutch action.
ATF fluid seems a bit thin. However tractor hydraulic fluid such as Penzoil Hydrotrans is very much like the spendy HD primary oil but alot cheaper and works good.
I must do somthing even if its wrong!
