BDL 3" open primary jackshaft

All,

I'm having problems with the jackshaft grinding on the starter ring gear on my bike. I have tried [i]several[i]different brands, and get the same outcome each time. It grinds during starting, and now grinds when the bike runs. I've tried Spyke, Ultima twice and not sure what to do. I was told by a guy I know at a local shop to shim the jackshaft assembly on the starter shaft. As it sits, it barely clears the starter ring, so I'm not sure what shimming this out further will do.

As a reference, I'm running an Ultima 127, Primo 6 speed transmission, and Spyke 2.0 starter.

The frustrating part is that I've put a system together like this before without as much trouble.

It was a big thing 15 years ago and I do recall it coming up a lot back then on this site. If you do a search I bet you'll find it.

The Belt Drive fix is the best solution. You can sometimes get them to work decent without the 3 piece BDF Jackshaft but it does help tremendously with this issue. Above is a link from this forum with instructions on adapting it to you Ultima Drive. I have sold hundreds of them......

I installed the 3 piece "fix" and it seems to be a lot quieter, but I think the teeth are still barely contacting the starter ring on the clutch basket. How about milling the silver sleeve down a few thousands so it pulls the jackshaft back a little? If I'm missing something, please let me know,

It comes with spacers to lengthen the j/s to get the best engagement to the ring gear. Usually they need to run at least one spacer. The coupler is directional and will go on further one way then the other. I have never had to cut it down before.

wont placing a spacer in there lengthen the JS and stick it out even further? I guess I thought they would be needed if it wouldn't reach far enough onto the starter ring gear to turn it.

Forgive me if I don't understand.

Correct. I asked thinking if they were in there you could remove them to shorten up the assembly length

Oh, I see. I do not have any spacers in there. It's frustrating. This is the 3rd jackshaft I've tried.

Check your starter some of the Ultima starters come with a spacer on the starter that basically adapts the j/s to fit with the bigger bolt or vice versa and if its still on there thats your problem. It looks like e seal or small bearing on the output shaft
