starter problem
replaced starter on 2000 twin cam. have been cranking for the last year or two using the push button on the solenoid end cap. now using the starter button starter spins but only engages after many tries. Good charge on battery, 380 cca. good grounds. same jackshaft that was working on old starter. custom bike with ultima open primary.
any suggestions?

are both starters identical?
if not, he jack shaft might be misaligned either vertically or horizontally.
When install the starter, try to keep it up while tightening bolts, it may give a few thousands of extra clearance in vertical alignment.
as for horizontal alignment, there should be about .125 clearance/distance between the starter's and ring gears. Too close may prevent engagement.
Is it solid jack-shaft or the bullet proof or Harley like , consisting of a few parts[ sloppier and easier to engage]?
btw, why are you no using starter solenoid - using electricity and a remote button?

not a solid jackshaft. years back I had to replace contacts in solenoid. and again about three years later. that's when I put a button type end cap on the solenoid. have put one on my heritage as well. have never had to use it on the heritage but good to have at a small price.
new starter matches old, both are longer than stock. old starter had no i.d. stamped on it. if i.d. was stickered it has long since worn off. may order a new ultima jackshaft. this all started to get the bike starting with the switch before putting it up for sale. have had the bike for 8 or 9 years, don't know if I can actually part with it.

Check the starter drive (bendix) Sounds like it could be bad. Easiest way to check it is to pull the starter off the bike if the output shaft turns both ways replace the starter drive. They are typically $75-100 for a decent one. Feel free to call me if you need help

respect your posts on here and thanks for the imput. new starter but a two year old agm battery. battery tests good volts and cca . will put cables from a group 65 battery to rule out battery failing under a load next day off.
will post if it makes the difference.

Not sure exactly what you are saying ,Do you have the solenoid with the button now? and you are saying it won't crank by pushing that button. or by pushing the handlebar button? Is the solenoid easy to get to? you can take the end cap off and depress the contacts by hand,,If it cranks, then that eliminates any alignment issues and points the finger at the solenoid contacts or maybe a dirty or weak solenoid relay..or something before the solenoid..
Solenoid contacts don't last long with 100 amps running through them..
