Rear belt tension test

I know there are a million threads on rear belt tension...If you look it up you will find ...apply 10 lbs of downward tension then you should have about ??? inches of play in the bottom of the belt..I went to the Harley shop and pushed on numerous belts...the top..and i got anywhere from 1/8 inch to 5'8 inch play in the top of the belt...I have always ran 1/2 inch top in my chain but I am still ??? about a belt..I am running about 1/2 inch play in the top right now...is this too loose for a belt? a lot of people will say yes..Will cranking down on big mama ruin a belt?? I don't want to stress my tranny bearings either ....How much play in the top of your belt?? How much do you run?

On a rigid bike 1/2" at the tight spot is fine.
