FXR and a "127
 
I'm sure this has been beaten to death over the years on this site, but I'm lazy and want to get fresh feedback.

I want to pick up an early (1992-1995) FXR and stuff a 127" Ultima, a 6 speed gear box, and an open primary. I want to run a narrow glide, 21" wheel, 16" original "spun" rear wheel, and hopefully retain the rubber mounting. Will this fit? Can I keep the rubber mount? I don't want to modify the frame, and keep it as tight as it was when new. I have started to look for a donor, and am surprised how expensive they are!

should fit with no problems. Keep looking, I bought mine a little over a year ago for 2500.

When I was building my chopper, I initially was looking into either Dyna or FXR setup, ( everybody was doing hard or soft tails) , but I think there are much less options of primaries.
And FXR trany is funky, not sure if there are even aftermarket ones with 6 speed.

Instead, DAYTEC owner hooked me with their Episode frame, rubber mounted and with dyna style swing arm and shocks. It accepted softail trany and primary due to softail distance between motor and trany.
Great setup. By the way. DAYTEC was making frames for exile cycles.

funky? earlier models yes. 89 up no. OP no 95 FXRs, production stopped in 94 then a cvo version for 99 and 00.

That looks good, but I'm going to keep stock rake and frame length. To run softail setup, the transmission and engine setup is different, and also looks different than an FXR. There are some open primary options, but few as pointed out. Might have to piece together parts that will fit in the end. I may have Paugcho make me a frame like I want and run a softail setup. It's cheating, but might be easier in the end

I was wondering about that frame. I dig it. It's different than most of the other softtails out there. It has a more agressive look to it. How is the trail? Looks like about 48 degrees of rake. Any flop?

I built a chop like that for a customer years ago. I tried to talk him out of it, but he was persistent. I setup the rake and trail as good as I could, figured out the geometry I needed for trees, but the front end was still very "heavy".

He took delivery and wrecked it at end of his driveway.

It's actually dyna setup of swing arm and shocks, albeit more aggressively angled. They tuned pretty appropriately- so the suspension works nicely for my 170 lb. motor and trany are rubber mounted as one piece.[ special cradle by Daytec]
As far as rake- i built this front end and set it on the frame keeping in mind the best geometric traditions of Scandinavian choppers- with zero stretch up or forward and all rake.

It's 49 degree in the neck + 7 degree in STORZ[49mm tubes] trees. only 12" over legs. Gives me trail of about 4". perhaps closer to the 3" would be better, but i couldn't find 8 degree trees and i don't like the adjustable ones.[ Tolle, Sweden, a guru in long ends- suggests 2-4" trail] I can turn in parking lot 90 degree turns practically with one hand, even though i have relatively narrow handlebars. Mind you, I have manual shifter that at times i shift in a turn.

There's practically no flop.

On high speed it's like a rocket. very steady and no wobble period.
I have very soft suspension , practically no preload, so the harley dyna lower legs/hydraulics operate appropriately, never leaked seals or wore excessively the fork bushings.

The bike I setup was a little wrong then in the trail. It did "flop" a little, telling me I didn't compensate enough with the 8" over legs. Hindsight I guess

Indeed, longer front ends will be somewhat heavier per se, but shouldn't be labor-some to ride. Additionally the fork has less chance to twist with an appropriate setup.
I have a brace on the lower legs, but don't have to. Storz tree is great as it pinches tubes in upper and lower tree as opposite to harley's setup[only bottom]- i find it much sturdier.

Actually slight flop is not a problem, but rather helps in turns.

The easiness of straightening the bars back is what makes the difference.

Achieving the correct trail is the key.

Tolle, when was seeking approval by Swedish authorities of his long ended bikes , demonstrated a bike with 30" over front end which he rode in a parking lot around the cones like it was a stock bike, without putting his foot down.

Scandinavians remain quite loyal to long choppes with 15-25" over front ends and huge rakes. Their bikes ride awesome. I know a production long chopper- Hogtech Absolute, a great machine.

The 127 will fit a stock fxr frame. The trannys won't you will have to do a gear set or just switch the guts from a 6 speed and put them in an FXR case. There are some 2" ultima belt drives that will work in an fxr. It's the same as a similar year bagger. It will work with the rubber mounts. The rubber mounts play hell on the belts. I have the Velva Ride front and stabilizers in my fxr along with a travel limiter to help keep everything from moving too much. My FXR drivetrain was moving so much it was touching the cleveblocks on the back of the primary under hard acceleration. I have the velva ride stabilizers too. It also has a Carlini torque arm on it to help hold everything in alignment. It was a belt eating machine at first but a less sticky tire and the limiters it's had the same belt on it for a long time. It was so bad before I got where I could change the belt in just over 2 hours! I had plenty of practice. I'm Too stubborn to give in and put a chain on it. Lol.

John,

You mention a 2" belt drive on your FXR. Any reason not to use this?
