1980 fxe backfire

I have a 1980 Harley fxe shovelhead, at a low speed it backfired. after stalled, when started sounded like s--t was barely moving thank god was only 2 blks from home. replaced spark plugs, wires, checked duel fire coil read 3.50ohms , but still bought a single fire coil ignition was good. still sounds bad. switched around plug wires on coil noticed one pipe was hot and the other wasn't. did it again and it was the opposite pipe that was hot. the bike was running really good before this problem. don't know a lot about bikes. old cars a little. don't know what is wrong. need help please thank you

Welcome to CC! First thing we need to know is if you have a dual fire or single fire ignition system, single fire coils have three feed wires, dual fire coils only have two.

In future tests, forget about the ohms test, it is not always reliable...coils can break down under load..just scratch the coil to ground and you should see spark, if so, the coil is good.............You can't switch wires around on a singe fire unit,.....only on dual fire ignitions.....you said you swapped out the dual fire coil, but was unclear if you switched out the ignition module with it.......Let us know if you have a singe fire unit set up with plug wires on correctly..

It is a single fire single coil dyna, also the electronic ignition is dyna 2000i. I have just changed the Intake manifold seals and the flange adapter. Also cleaned and oiled air filter on mikuni carb. Ive been trying to adjust ignition timing hoping both pipes would get hot. Wirh no luck. I heard i should use splitfire plugs gap set at .025-.035. Is that true. Don't really have any guages or testers that i can use just using my ear. I know how it use to sound. Now you can hear most of sound through one pipe. But you can feel air coming out of both?????confused dont know what to do next.

For a rough test, Pull the plugs out.Place your front plug up against the cylinder to ground it..
Hold your thumb over the spark plug hole and turn the bike over...you should see spark at app.the same time that compression is shooting out ...close enough..Do the same with the
rear cylinder...This should give you an eyeball appraisal of the ignition system..If this looks good then I would be looking at doing a compression test...I had a toyota truck with a hole burned in the exhaust valve..it ran great but was just lacking in take off power.. Do the compression test and go from there...
