Diesel Panhead...
First off, I am new here, so please allow me to say hello. I am also starting my first chopper build so I signed up because I thought this was a good place to get information and help. I am more than happy I did. Okay now to the subject at hand, please do not make fun of me for this question, but I was wondering some numbers so that I can possibly make a decision about the engine I am currently in the process of building. The only original part I have is a 1957 Panhead case. I kinda just fell into that and was happy I got the case. First, I was wondering how high a compression anyone has ever seen a Panhead at? Secondly, does anyone know if there are any steel cast heads available for the Panhead engine? Thirdly, is there any bullet-proof combination of parts for the bottom end that could handle ridiculous compression ratios? Fourthly, is there anyway to strengthen that case or are there any strong cases available? Keep in mind I bought mine for the VIN and it needs a lot of work.
Now for the short of it and hopefully there are some like minded folks out there that could offer some ideas. I was thinking about converting the Panhead into a diesel. Yes, I do realize there is a contingent of people out there that will say it is impossible. Well, in my opinion nothing is impossible even if improbable. In fact, just today I saw a picture of a Panhead with OHC that was built by a guy back in the 1950s or 1960s. So, why not add some other crazy idea to the pot. Any takers? Again, please no insults.

S&S builds some strong Panhead stuff going big on inches and compression. STD also.

It sounds like an interesting Idea, not sure how it could work. I think you may need more than one panhead to experiment with though.
I would look to see one though.

go for it, I've seen a Kawasaki with a VW Golf Diesel engine so I know a diesel will work in a bike,
also some GM Diesel motors back in the day were nothing but converted gas engines (hence their problems so I'm told) so there might be some relevant info for ya
Good luck

No insults, I'd like to see one work. I believe you could get it to run, but your issue would be overheating (compression ignition engines run at about 26:1 CR). I do not believe an air cooled engine could reliably tolerate the heat produced by a diesel.
Good Luck
and welcome to CC

the cases/cylinders/heads will handle 10:1 compression but will not handle diesel compression. Stroking and raising compression to 10:1 you should have someone weld extra webbing welds in the inner sides of the cases. The head chambers and valves on these older motors were configured to run on at LEAST 101 octane leaded gas so you need to do a lot of head work to make them work right with todays gas.
The best running and best reliable bet for this motor is an S+S 93" sidewinder kit with around 8:1 pistons. You can go with a 98" sidewinder but be warned there's a HUGE difference in the upkeep cost. This motor also runs best with a leinweber steep ramp cam, solid lifters and lightened side gears.
