2 by me......

Gotta love Sportys.
Built these 2 back in the day and am currently building a '74 XLH bobber for a former Marine.

B&W pic and one of me laying on bike is a '70 XLH running Amen frame & AEE springer. Built in 1972 and learned to master Bondo on this build. This one made Easyriders and took sweepstakes at a couple of shows in So Cal in the early/mid 70s. {Wish I had more pics of her, but 37 years, a move to here in Dixie and 3 marriages since.........I'm lucky to still have my doodads attached. ;-) }

Orange bike is a '69 XLCH kicker w/Joe Hunt mag and D&G girder front-end. {Be gentle....pic is from early 80s and I was mgmt at a printing Co......hence the "geek" look. lol }

Current build

Here's a couple of shots of the '74 I'm building. Still a long way to go.

The red '49 pan is "Ruby"....built & owned by a brother of mine.
The blue '79 80" is mine and what I do with shovelheads.

Well, I have had this one since 2000, I first brought it home in 7 cardboard boxes. It's a 1962 XLCH Ironhead Sportster 900.

Here's what it looked like when I first put it together.

After the original frame broke twice, I opted for a new frame from Paughco and went full custom on it. I designed and built a coffin tank for it, and when I found myself in possession of a 12 over Harmon girder, of course it just HAD to go on. With a 40* rake, that girder just sets it off. 16" rear, 21" front, rear drum brake only.

WoW! I can't believe it's been a year since anyone posted here, and that was me.

Well, I entered my 1962 XLCH Ironhead Chopper in a small local bike show this last weekend. There were 2 categories, Pre-1984, and 1984 and up, so I was competing in the first.

Like I said, it was small, most people had modern bikes, so there were only 3 entries in the Pre-1984 categories, so I was guaranteed to get at least 3rd place.

I ended up taking 1st Place. I was competing against a 1949 Panhead and a 1983 XR1000. Both are in the picture below.

The documentation I put out with the bike was a list of all the things I had done to the bike, a full reprint of the recent Revzilla.com article about down sizing to smaller bikes, and the 2 pages from that article that featured my '62.

I had a bunch of fun prepping for the show and was happy to see the rewards for that effort. This is only the second show I have ever put it in. The other was almost 12 years ago, right after I finished the full custom build.

The photos above were courtesy of one of the local professional photographers, Forrest Coss. He took both a Color and Black&White for the "Old School" look.

Nice, I love the old stuff too..I grew up on the Hondas..but only because I was 10 years old...One day a friend of my dads rode up on a Sportster,...I thought it was the ugliest thing
I had ever seen, leaking oil...I was riding a Honda 50......i advanced through almost every thing
that Honda came out with over the years...My brother had the firsts CB 750 in the Shreveport
area..because he worked in the only Honda shop in the area.....this was high school......The older you get the more you appreciate the older stuff...Harley..and really makes you admire someone like Mr. Harley for designing and building the first V twin engine..
It looks like you live in California..I am sure the bike shows out there are legit..but I spent an
entire day hauling my Shovel chop..the one in the picture to a mom and pop bike show around here only to lose to a stock twin cam Harley with a fancy leather seat on it ...obviously the rallys nephew or someone..Mom and pop.. never go to another one..

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with Bike Shows. I wouldn't even begin to try entering a big show against the Trailer Queens that seem to dominate them. This was a small, local show put on by one of the local MC's at the end of their Poker Run.

I know all the owners of all the bikes in the show, and most of the audience that voted in the judging. I think this show was legitimate. The 49 Panhead took second, and is owned by the President of the MC sponsoring the Show. I am friends with the Members, but not part of their Club. To me, that helped show the integrity of the vote count. The 1984 and Up category had 8 bikes entered and again, a non-Member won.

Hopefully you will find another opportunity to show your bike and will have a better experience.

At least you had people from the audience judging. Here mom and pop and family was the judge. They had a couple of guys walking around, and would bend down and look at a stock exhaust, then nod their head up and down like ..yea..is every body looking at me? Oh well live and learn..I remember California man cool...I was out there in the 70's..Keep up the good work..
