whats a good bike to start with to make a bobber on a very low budget??

I can make alot of stuff myself and do all the work myself. i want to build a junk yard bobber. possibly out of a 60'2 to 80's era machine. whats something good and cheap to find? i was thinking of something atleast 650cc, and chain drive.

XS 650 or CB750 both kick ass for that and I can give you advice along the way. Also GS Suzukis and KZ kawasakis. You basically want Japanese aircooled chain drive from about 72 to 88 for the easiest job and spoked wheels help too.A little more money and do a BSA with an A65 motor.

The XS was built by a guy named Cyclepsycho it just happens to be one of the coolest examples I know of of a cheap cleansweet XS bobber. I would bet it could be done for under $2000 easily.
The CB750 I built for $2500
Thanx

Yep sporties are a good choice as well. How about an idea about what you figure you can spend and I'll give you a pretty good idea what you can expect to do?

Little man, I am going to deal with you in the same way I deal with most of the 13 year olds trying to prove what a bad ass they are that I come across in my class room. I am going to try to teach you a little bit and then when you prove too hardheaded to learn (because you are really much more worried that you might be gay because you are much more comfortable in the company of guys than girls) I will ignore you until you get sent off to alternative school for downloading japanese school girl porn or the anarchist cookbook(go ahead and get that one it gives you a good chance of blinding yourself or at least getting the good parking places).

Obviously you know nothing about chopper or bobber history or what the terms actually mean. When WWII soldiers came back from the war they found the farms and civillian life boring and confining. The first bobbers came from bobbing and hacking things off the bikes they had to make them faster(nothing there about bling to show how much money you have, believe me they werent rich guys). Bobbers were factory bikes modified and stripped down to only the essentials. The chopper culture chopped the factory frames to get what they were after and foreign chops are all over 60s and 70s chopper culture.

Now then you come here with an attitude so lets see what you have chopped or bobbed. What have YOU BUILT? Not what are mommy and daddy going to get you if you can only graduate from high school, not what has daddy bought himself, what have you done? All that matters show us.

Now then below you will find some pictures of bikes lets see if you can spot the REAL choppers and bobbers, I built two of them and one of those is true to the name chopper or bobber:

If cost is a *huge* issue then go with a mid-eighties XS or KZ.

I bought a 1983 KZ440 LTD with only 14k miles on it for $300 and converted it to chain final, painted it mint green and added a girder front end I rebuilt. When I'm all finished I'll have a cool little retro thumper for around $750

The Panhead, Norton and Honda's are my favorites. The Evo bike at the top is cool too, but doesn't have that "garage built" feel the way the others do. I got respect for anybody out there building there own stuff. Takes creativity and skill to make instead of buy/assemble. Wish I had the talent and tools to make more of the pieces on my bike. I could care less what country a bike originates from. In fact the more obscure the better.
