so anyway, cut those pieces, then cut out and sanded some ears from some 1/4" plate scrap i had in garage. the pictures below pretty much describe that whole process. it didn't take very long at all. it was so simple, i was doubting myself as i recalled the gloomy prediction from the peg manufacturer. ("you'll shoot yer eye out, kid!")

everything seemed to make sense to me, so i used a stack of washers in place of the pegs and hauled 'em to a guy to tig up for me. of all the welds on my frame, i know these would be some of the most important.

in this last pic, you can kinda see i used a little triangle plate on the inside edge of these brackets that runs along the bottom frame rails, and hold the through bolt for my rear brake pivot. between the piece of square tubing and that triangle piece of plate behind it, there's over a foot of weld holding each peg bracket to the frame. i feel safe standing on them over pretty much whatever.

cruisin' along. i don't have any pics of the process for the rear brake setup, but it went like this. rear brake stay is hidden up kind of at the front of the rear axle drop part of the frame. a bigass coped bung welds to the top tube coming down, and two stout 3/8 heim joints are joined with a very short stud between them. the stay remains pretty hidden from most angles, reducing the clutter of lines.

the brake actuator rod is the stock one cut up and modified. the rear is pretty much as it was, the front was cut off, drilled through the centerline and extended with some b7, fine thread rod, plug welded and end welded into the old rod. the front end of that threaded rod is fitted with a clevis, to look better than the stock clevis, and give some added adjustability.

oh yeah, that spring is some cheap napa piece. attaches to the bottom brake stay bolt, and through a small cross drilled hole in the rod at the front. i made a small little jig to stretch the spring when we were powdercoating parts. and yes, the powdercoat holds up easily to the spring's action.

the brake arm is 5/8 roundbar, not easily bent, so i had to get a buddy with a torch setup to help me. i had a coat hanger bent up like i needed it to look, so it didn't take long to bend it like i liked. peg on end is a mini beartrap looking piece to match the mx pegs; i made it in 15 minutes from a piece of 3/4 x 1/8 flatbar, with the anvil and mini sledge, and teeth cut with the three square and round files. drilled a hole in the back and slipped it over the end of the arm. back side of the arm was undercut and bent to wrap around the pivot tube. pivot tube has a couple of bronze bushings in the ends, and a grease fitting drilled into it to keep 'er full of grease. also, i made a little tab on the back side of the pivot tube, for a set screw setup (using a hex cap screw) to adjust pedal down.

you'll also see in that pic that i cut little gussets for the fender mounts at the frame. remember, i had welded those, and even though they felt solid as hell to me, i had visions of them cracking down the road, so i had a more qualified friend weld in small gussets i made at various points on the frame. trying not to take any unnecessary chances.

so, it was time for the final welds to be laid on the frame. i don't have any good pictures of it, but that bottom part below the seat, between the two bottom frame rails, has a plate welded to the top to mount my battery box and regulator on. underneath that is another plate, welded to some hinges from tractor supply, which are welded to the frame at the cross tube under the seat post. nobody really notices it, but it gives some protection and more room to do a little wiring out of sight, but not open to splashed water from the road. the bottom plate that is hinged bolts up at the back using the two bolts that mount the regulator to the top. my main frame ground it up under there, and the plate stands off from the frame rails an eighth of an inch or so, allowing any water that gets in there to quickly run out.

whew boy! i know i'm kinda flying through it, but feel free to ask about any of these steps, and i'll be happy to tell you what i did and why, if i actually had a reason. i'm not going to lay my whole thought process out otherwise, lest i seem like a total moron.

so anyway, it was the final homestretch. i finally could tear 'er down and start finishing things out, making everything look good. the frame cleanup was kinda labor intensive, really. i had so many welds to dress, and no access to a large blasting setup for the whole frame, so i just cleaned up and prepped the frame by hand. carbide burrs kept me swimming in gazillions of metal slivers. i mean, like you wouldn't believe. and everyone was like a tiny little paring knife. for several weekends my wife endured me wearing these things home. i'd be curious how most folks deal with shit like that. it was a complete freakin' mess.

but the frame sure did look pretty, to me.

i sell fasteners and supplies to several body shops, and one of my buddies at one of those places agreed to mold in some welds for me with mud. i didn't mind doing it, but if someone who does that shit every day offers to do it for free, hell yeah i'll take 'em up on it. allowed me to get to work on cleaning up my engine sooner. turns out, my buddy worked on my frame during his breaks, when he likes to get high, so the frame got mudded a bit more than i anticipated, and finished a little less, if that makes any sense. i had to keep my date with my other painter friend for dropping off the frame to him, so i pulled an all nighter with the two part glaze and a lot of emery cloth dressing up the rest of the frame to match my first buddy's work. a few days later, danny dailey called me and told me to pick up the frame, and i was grinning like a possum.

it's happening! this bitch is finally about to happen!

Bad ass, Poop. The pegs are extremely nice! I bought a set last year for my HD that are similar. I should of made my own like you did though. The place I bought them from advertises AMERICAN MADE, and "Hand Crafted in The USA" and have it posted all over their website. When I got the pegs, theres a Made in Tiwain stamp on the inside of each. I sent the company an email asking WTF? and their reply was that they buy the pegs, made for a bicycle, overseas and then replace the center shaft with a clevis type shaft to be used on a motorcycle, that they made right here in the USA...LOL. So they're NOT American made, they're American "altered". I was pissed, I paid about $80 for the pegs, which are really nice, but they're NOT American made.

..heres a pic of the pegs I got, for comparison. It looks like they did add a disclaimer on their webpage that says "some of the parts come from outside the US". I shoulda made my own!

...you might try a big ass magnet to help pick up/catch the small metal slivers. A lint roller might work pretty good for getting it off of your clothes too.

so i mentioned the debt of gratitude i owe my stepfather. well here is why. that man retired from the local mill after a career in maintenance. and the guy is flippin' brilliant. his garage is full of the most inventive little contraptions i've ever seen.

so around christmas time i asked his advice on making a bracket to mount my honda engine to an engine stand i picked up cheap. he said bring the engine mount bracket and my engine by his place, and he'd look at it. when i brought it over, he started shuffling around the scrap pile through leftovers from some trailer builds. next day he called me back and said to come pick it up, he was done. wouldn't even accept a filet o' fish in return. he really is awesome.

looking at that pic, you can see the center of gravity of that motor is significantly above the pivot axis for that stand. no worries, though, the stand has a plenty large enough base, right?

well, you also might notice the blood on the floor by that stand. i was putting that engine in the stand by myself, in a hurry because i had to pick up the boy from daycare. the engine was mounted to the adapter, and i was trying to slide the tube from the mount bracket into the tube of the stand, only the stand kept rolling away. well, it was halfway in when i went to readjust my grip, and the engine rolled over on that axis with a furious twist. i was worried about the engine falling and hitting the floor, and when i grapped my finger tip went inside one of the engine mount bolt holes. after i got the engine finished mounted up, i noticed the blood, and then saw that my finger tip had nearly been twisted off. i got some stitches, but declined the x-ray. it was a few weeks before i realized i probably have a spiral fracture in my fingertip.

i had been planning on painting the engine black, maybe polishing the side covers. i wasn't totally sure on what i'd do, but i knew i had to start with cleaning it. and it was a bitch. finally i decided to plug it up tight and take the whole thing to the blast cabinet. a customer of mine has a large cabinet they give me access to, so i cut out work early one day and hauled my engine down to the beach and blasted away.

holy smokes, am i glad i did.

after having that thing back a day or so, it didn't take my buddy will very long at all to talk me into leaving the bulk of that engine raw. so i decided just to paint all those covers black, and carefully tape off and paint the cylinders, too.

another thing you'll notice in that last pic are the brass hose barbs i put in there. the front and rear cam chest covers have hose barb sleeves pressed in for oil mist hose routing. it's a little goofy looking, especially the high arch of hose going from the front chest cover to the rear. i figured 45 degree elbows would help that, and the brass would be a nice touch with the black. i ended up using a straight for the front one, so the hose cleared the top motor mount bracket, but you get the picture. i'd do it again.
