Exhaust question. Balance pipes, rejet etc.

I am planning on ripping the exhaust off my bike and replacing it with something like a front sweep around the front of the engine to have two wrapped pipes sweeping back on one side. I've been reading a lot about the need for a balance pipe and the need to rejet after changing the pipes. Given that this is a flat out road bike, and will never do anything more dramatic than take me fishing or to the occasional rally, is all this really necessary? How much will the bike suffer from simply changing the exhaust. A balance pipe I could probably work in if necessary, but I hate even touching the carbs. Frankly, those damn things intimidate me. haha

Hey, how ya doin? I'm new here but I know the answer about the carbs, anyway. In general you don't need to rejet but you will need to adjust your fuel/air any time you even change muffler styles. If you can't get enough fuel into the combustion chamber then you definitely need to rejet. Lots of luck!

BOOKS have been written on exhaust worked for a guy who ran a track car with a small block chevy, it had straight 8" tubes off the heads for exhaust. He saved up some cash (bookoo cash) and got a tuned exhaust system. It ran so poor we took it off and put the short pipes back on so who really knows?

I guess it's gonna be a trial and error job. Given I'm running a 30 year old parallel twin it's not like I'm losing what was a well tuned speed machine.

And thanks for the carb info. Probably needs done anyway.

I have an 82 nighthawk 650, 4 cylinder, the original exhaust was 4 pipes back, two on either side, they had a balance pipe under the bike. I took the original exhaust off and custom bent and welded one together that now comes 4 from the motor, Ys under the bike into one on either side, they follow the contours of the bike and then right behind the solo seat, they turn up at a 45 degree angle and rise up about 18-24". No muffler, no baffles, no balance pipe, didn't even touch the carbs other than cleaning. Runs like a top. I did not put any noise maker tips on there so it is not as loud as one would think.

Best thing to do is run it for a while now, build the new, put it on and try it out. If you are at loss in power or just doesn't feel right, cut it down, try it again, Trial and error style.

Sounds like a plan. Plan is to get a load of decent exhaust pipe so I can cut and try different combinations. Running a non-stock 2 into 1 at the minute and there's nothing wrong with it, but it's boring.

heheh he left a nice fold down/pistol grip 12 gauge and some of that fancy cop ammo here. I might get one of those for the RV. I gotta find out where he got that nasty ammo. It's like 1 big slug in the middle surrounded by little pellets.
