i've been chuckling for a day or so at your question "honestly is it worth it for a few inches...."

that's completely up to you. if by worth it you mean will you be monetarily compensated for your time and skill when you sell the bike? most likely, no.

really, only you can answer that question. it depends much upon your patience, your value for building vs. your value for riding, how much you enjoy doing something new, all kinds of things.

i have spent so much damned time on a little thirty five year old honda for a three year project now, it makes my head spin. some shit i've taken the time to figure out, other things i breezed by because they weren't important to me. but that's the big thing: is something important or not to me? i've sacrificed a lot of riding time. money. attention that might have gone to other projects, or to time in the gym. for me, it's the process. do i get satisfaction out of it? is it calming? does it express something inside of me i like? then i'll do it.

anyway, perhaps a little off point, but it was "worth it" to me to get it off my chest. i guess doing it will be worth it to you if you come up with something interesting enough to make it worth it, however you measure interesting.

My bike will always be my bike. Pretty sure I wiped out any resale value when I cut off the sub frame. This bike has been as much a learning curve as any desire to build the perfect bike. It's kept me entertained and tortured all summer. I got into this with zero knowledge of motorcycles and spent the first few weeks terrified to touch anything. Since then I've chopped, interchanged, rewired and apparently repaired the regulator/rectifier, and other assorted tinkering. Even when I get my next larger engine cycle, this one will be my test run for everything. So when I say worth it I meant really how much hassle it would be for someone with no fabricating abilities and a limited budget. Money doesn't float my boat.

Damn, can't believe I didn't see the double meaning there.... Hahaha....

Funny, I had a dozen people tell me that a 400 wasn't worth putting money and time into, but after seeing some of the projects on here and elsewhere, I couldn't leave her stock. Plus I'd have learnt bugger all and end up like those buffoons who are baffled by a flat tire and look at you like you're mental when you say 'petcock'.
