frisco tank

Need some help. I am going to frisco a tank. I want to make a sportster tank flat bottom. Do I need to make a flange on the replacement bottom to weld the tank to, or can i just cut it to the perimeter line and create a butt joint?

you could leave a little of the old bottom ...1/2 " in and spot the new and the old together and then butt the edges. Maybe a little more stable and stronger!

I already cut away the full bottom so there is only 2 options now. I think I will butt weld them and go from there. Thank you for your opinions.
