I don't know if I would call them "dead"... but I would say don't plan on an explosion of popularity. It seems to be a ghost of what it was 3-5 years ago.

Part of that is due to the rising populartity of bobbers... part from the economy... and part because the TV shows that artificially inflated the market, then caused it to collapse.

Since the seventies I have painted a couple hundred. For the last 5 years there has been almost nothing. I did one about 3 years ago... and started another one a couple years ago. That one was called off before it was done, due to the owners business failing. Many parts are still sitting here.

I just recently have been working with a shop that is building a few upscale bikes. The prototype is ready for me as soon as I can get to it... then tentatively a few more behind that one. ...but I am not assuming anything past the first one. It's shame... I LOVE doing them! {:-(

I own a bike shop and business is a little slow, but we do it all, so we can make up for the short fall of building. We make up for that in selling of apparel. Bikers love leather

It was a pretty good run - I still have mine, and will until I die. I am still building in my garage, and while I would like to have a nice comfy bagger at some point, I will still keep my chop

I think there was definitely a "fad" fueled by bad television shows, but if you look at history, chops were around back in the 70's and have always been there... just not in your face every time you turn on the TV...

Honestly, I enjoyed the first documentary with Jesse James in it, but never really cared for any of the biker build off, or other shows... not mentioning one of them intentionally as it seems to spark a wild fury on this board.

The majority of bikers I've known since the 1970s have always been blue collar and broke most of the time so in that sense not much has changed.

And those types of bikers will always be building something from parts in their garages.

So the only thing that's changed is things are going back to normal.

choppers far from dead! just weeding out the fucks who aren't suposed to be here in the first place. the fact that people aren't comin into the shop could just mean people are buildin' their own shit whith what they got...to me thats a win!

I know my local indy had to do some serious adapting...from just building and painting choppers and then about 6 years ago he started doing oil changes and bolt on shit for stock bikes...thats how he's been livin the last 6 years...not his passion but he's makin it till the next "big thing"

You bet Nick, some of the guys who put on the "uniform" for a weekend ride went the extra mile and got choppers and now that fad is fading away so will the demand, especially the high end stuff. As for the newbies, I say welcome aboard and enjoy the ride(pun intended)

One person's loss is another person's gain,..........I've heard about plenty of big dollar, store bought choppers,...ones that their previous owners had to remortgage thier homes for,......being sold for pennies on the dollar to the next guy.

There's are plenty of great deals out there,.........the used bike/chopper market is saturated.

The funny part is even at bargain basement prices, you still can't sell them. Right now a bike that sold for 40 grand won't even fetch 20 grand.
