SAUGERTIES, N.Y. - An enforcement detail in the village will target
motorcycles with illegal muffler systems, according to Police Chief Joseph
Sinagra.
Sinagra said the enforcement will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and Saturday
in the areas of Partition and Main streets in the village. He said six
officers will be part of the detail, with some of those officers coming from
the state police and Ulster County Sheriff's Office.
"The target of the enforcement is motorcycles that have illegal muffler
systems," Sinagra said. He said the illegal muffler systems have caused a
disturbance in terms of quality of life in the community. Sinagra said the
enforcement is aimed at educating motorcycle riders and asking them to be
cognizant of the noise from illegal muffler systems, though traffic tickets
will be issued if necessary.
The chief added that an enforcement detail last weekend resulted in 139
tickets being issued for a number of vehicle and traffic violations, not
just to motorcyclists.
Sinagra discussed the planned detail during Wednesday's Town Board meeting.
Councilwoman Leeanne Thornton recounted an incident she witnessed on
Washington Avenue in which a motorcyclist went up and down the street three
times doing tricks.
