check your tires

this might be some usefull info... check your date codes on your tires.. I have had a few blowouts on my service trucks.. I wondered why..I keep the tires checked often as dot requires.. but still had failures. out of a perfectly good looking tire....this explains alot...

I read on dunlop's page that you should use your tires not more then 3 years from the date the were made. (that date is stanced on the tire)

How to Read a Motorcycle Tire

Good topic 06.

I just had to return my 250 Avon because I found it was defective. I sent it back to where I purchased the tire and they intern sent me a new one at no cost. From what I understand Avon has been having a few issues with there tires as of late.

It doesn't hurt to fully check them rubbers out before hauling ass to destination unknown.

I will dispute some of these finding as being hogwash.

I've owned a few vehicles for ALOT of years, with very little miles on them. Never had an issue with tires blowing out or even cracking.

As a matter of fact when I sold my IROC in 2005 or 2006 (bad memory) the tires still looked like brand new.......the car was an '87 with 20,000 original miles on them. Had that car 145mph a few times late into that ownership too.

I never read the article so it may cover what I'm about to say but Oh well: It makes a HUGE difference how the tires are stored. You should never store them on their side as it breaks down the sidewall of the tire ... car, truck, motorcycle ect ..... it doesn't matter. They should also never be stored on a flat surface (IE the floor). You want them on a rack with 2 small bars and have them rotated (spun) every 3 months or so.

OR ..... Maybe they just don't make em' like they use to.

I'll also add:

#1 DON"T BUY FIRESTONE
#2 DON"T BUY FIRESTONE
and
#3 DON"T BUY FIRESTONE

and #4 don't buy Avon motorcycle tires!!

I just bought an 06 harly lowrider. It still has the origional H/D screaming eagle tires that were on it new. thay have 3400 miles on them and still look good. Plenty of tread and no visable cracks or scars. The bike was stored in a heated and cooled shop. The local H/D shop said without even looking at them I need new tires.Would that be true? Can't afford new tires right now if I don't need them.

well you might be lucky...maybe not.. my tires on my service truck were in great looking shape..yes I check air pressure on a regular basis..I have herd of people with simlar issues on bikes is the reason I brought this up.. just keep a eye on them...I saw a post about someone comming from daytona not long back.. had a tire come apart on the frt of his bike... totaled it..he did walk away..but hurt pretty bad..his tire was in good shape & he had just checked air pressure a hour before the accident..

thanks for the advice 06 pitbull. I guess I better go ahead and start saving some cash for tires. it took me several years of saving to get a nice harly, don't want to lose it over a tire issue.

Good thread Pitbull....

I recently had a blowout on one of my work trucks that i had just put new tires on. The thing just threw the tread and completely came apart in an instant, while i was pulling my skidsteer running 70 down the highway. Luckily it was a back tire that blew. The tires were new, but instead of buying them at a big tire dealer, i bought em at a local shop.

That tire was either defective or had been on the shelf for years.

I'm in the concrete business, and am always pulling trailers and equipment, and my work trucks all have generators and air compressors and plug kits. We can fix a tire on the side of the road and limp home if it isn't blown.

Blown tires on your truck flat out sucks if your pulling equipment...

my 1 ton service van carries alot to..about 15K... I have had a few tires come apart to thay wer good tires & properly inflated... I ran it up to age of the tire... I had to replace a set on my dually pick up...thay were out of date..but had more than 3/4 of the tread left on them.. thay got between 5-6 yrs old..& all the side walls were starting to crack... that sucked... 1600.00 for new tires... but the old tires had very low miles on them...shit just goes bad even if you dont use it..i even keep tire covers over my trailer tires & trucks if not being used to avoid sunlight problems...just like in this pict..my enclosed trailer in the back ground is sitting on 2x8 boards to keep them off the ground & tire covers on them..

I've owned my own business for over a decade, and yea, it's either feast or famine in Construction. I've managed to land some really good builders and they've kept me going.

Not only do you worry about yourself, you worry about your employees and their families as well.

Things have been rough the last couple of years, but this year is looking to be a really good one.
