Going to purchase my first pistol this Dec. Looking for a 3 inch barrel 1911, Was told I could find a Rock Island Armory for about 400 dollars.

I just want something simple, in all black, nothing flashy.

Going to go price guns again

go with a full size 1911, you'll regret getting a compact; and if you are going to be concealing a full size 1911, don't worry, its actually just as easy or easier to conceal than most 9mm because of how slim it is; I have several 9mm and several 1911 pistols and the 1911s are hella easier to conceal and plus they pack a bigger punch........

Cool Thanks

I was told a 3 inch because its easier, but also told to buy a Glock 23 as my first pistol (I really hate glock) but I only plan to own one pistol for a while and figure might as well get the one I want. I can learn to shoot it properly

I carry a full size 1911, but I can dress around it and half the time it doesn't really matter anyway.
A Commander is a good compromise.
Nothing against the short ones but Browning designed them to do a certian amount of mechanical operations with a certian amount of time vs/ length of travel, and destroking one takes a toll.
Anyway....it's the grip that has to be concealed.....and that's the same full size or not unless it's an Officer's model.
At 50 yards the extra barrel is nice. Just my opinion and you know what they say.

I am going to go out looking again this comeing week (VACATION!!)
I had seen (Last time I went looking) was a Springfield Armory for 600, used at a pawn shop, but was advised against it because I should be able to get one new for that price?

Also found 1911pistols.com and they sell some at about 500-1500 and simple and nice.

Figured worst case scenario I might just get a browning 9mm. But not too sure.

Na

The browning 9mm I found to be a little wild as the mag got empty, the one pistol I never took too, maybe just me dunno.

best 9mm I ever pulled out of a holster and went defcon 5! glock 9mm , I practiced even shooting in low light situations and it was just the best for me, no safetys to take off or snag .....just go

make sure you put up pics of your purchase ...........american arms make some great derringers

but glock for me

Wow

I saw a 44 mag derringer in a shop in Bolton in the UK

the same shop had 2 Wildey 44 automags one pistol I really wanted to try

but i did enquire if the dealer had ever fired the 44 derringers ( he had 2) ...no he said he bought them as an investment .... they where engraved beautifully

now that would have been a good night ...........lighting up the range with a derringer loaded with 44 mag winchester hollows ........

1911's...I love Officers models for carry (i have a few) and I can drive tacks with them. Don't buy into high capacity blah blah blah, I dont know if these are current stats but for a long time FBI statistics revealed most self defense shootings occurred at an average distance of 3 feet and consisted of 3 shots.

1911's have been around 100 years now and still one of the BEST pistol designs.

I agree with Gypsy about shorter slide lengths on 1911's...they get very temperamental.

Glock 23 in an excellent pistol (hate them or love them) and have a look at S&W M&P's. I have a 40C (40 cal compact model) and love love love it. small revolvers are great like any of the J frame s&w's but those are for advanced shooters. (you need to have steady hands and lots of practice to hit targets tiny barrels)

Everyone will have their opinion of it but if I may relate this to choppers for a moment...my 1911's are like my chopper...they've got soul. Everything else just seems like plastic to me.

Here's some fun reading to offer an understanding of Handgun wounding and effectiveness from the FBI.
http://www.firearmstactical.com/pdf/fbi-hwfe.pdf

Understanding this material will go a long way towards your hand gun selection. You have to decide the purpose of the gun before you can truely figure out what you want. Are you buying the gun for concealed carry, home defense, target shooting etc?

Last thing, if you're buying it for home defense...not too many people will argue the fact that a handgun is a second resort to some sort of rifle, shotgun, shoulder weapon. If this is strictly for home defense, consider a good shotgun...

peacee...............

We have roughly 40-50 shotguns and box's of ammo, I am looking for a good pistol to carry for self defense. I really dont like glock because of the way it feels, same as most of the other styles of pistols.

I have always wanted a 1911 so thats why I am baseing my information but also a few 9mm's I like but I figure it out like this. If I have to pull out the gun I have to make sure they dont get back up
