Mock-Up Question
Ok guys - So I have a bike that was ridden for a year or two and then taken apart to be custom painted. The original owner lost interest and never got around to painting it so it sits in boxes in my garage. It is misssing the motor and tranny but has everything else. My question is, do I need to do a complete mock up with a new engine and tranny or can I just paint and reassemble it then purchase a motor and tranny?

You can do it the way you want! Since everything is there and already mocked, all you'll have to do after you get the finished parts back is align the motor and tranny! Shouldn't be any problems there.

Cool, that is what I was hoping. The wife wont release the funds for the drivetrain for a few months and I wanted to get it put together in the mean time.

Nothing ever goes back together the way it should, unless you are the one that took it apart and know the drivetrain was lined up properly to begin with, I would double check all of that. In the meantime start putting some shit together until the "wife" allows you make the necessary purchase

i would regard the previous work with suspicion, given missing drivetrain, and loss of interest. usually folks don't lose interest at that phase of the build unless they realize they screwed up along the way.

Looks like the safest thing will be to mock it up. Which leads into another question....I am thinking about doing frame and tin the same color but I want to powdercoat the frame. Is it hard to match paint to powdercoat or vice versa? Or should I just paint the frame?

i painted my frame, to save money. but even during final assembly i was wishing i'd had it coated. fwiw...
it's about impossible to get some things together without some scratches, ets. at least with powder it will be minimal. on the other hand, paint has a gloss that's hard to beat, if that's what you're after. color matching is only an issue if you completely lose your mind and go with something other than black.

p.s. black also matches up easily with black nail polish, after you scratch something or move an exhaust mount down the road or something like that.

I agree with the black color, the only thing bad about it is that you pull into a parking lot and there are 100 other black bikes. I like to be different. I was looking through a few of the other forums and it sounds like the way to go is to find a powdercoat color and then have the paint matched to it.....I love that I am getting advice from a guy with the screen name Poop. That is classic, thanks bro!
