MMW Build

Started a build with a roller from Malibu Motorcycle Works a couple of weeks back. First time bike builder up to the challenge of figuring it all out. I have a blog about the build at midnightcustoms.blogspot.com

The frame MSO is War eagle from Florida. The tank is from custom chrome. The rear fender is from kustomwerks. The wheels are from RC components. Ordered Ultima 113 cu.in. motor from Jireh. Wiring harness is from Ultima as is the single fire ignition.

Driveline assembly

I meant to post this yesterday so that the build log reflects where I currently am in the process. Installed the motor, transmission and primary on the weekend. The primary assembly took the longest (if I exclude the trip to Ace to buy engine mounting bolts and tranny nuts. Every project I do seems to require either Ace, Lowes or Home Depot's involvement!). I tried to put sequence photos together on my blog so that the order of operations is clear for anyone else going though the process.

http://midnightcustoms.blogspot.com

Here's the transmission and motor located on the frame:

Closeup of the primary in a semi-assembled state:

Final status as of sunday:

I need someone to help me figure out what length belt to buy (calculator anywhere?) and I need some advise on brake lines and hydraulic clutch lines.

I want to run the hydraulic lines inside the frame as much as possible.
Is this doable?
Can I buy DIY brake line that I cut to length?

I also need to know a good source for oil lines and fittings.

Never built a bike before!

That's all for now. You can see more detail in my blog if you need to.
Motor: Ultima Black 113 cu.in ( 1850 cc ) EPA compliant
Transmission: Ultima 6 speed Black RSD hydraulic clutch
Primary: Ultima Drag style 85mm belt drive

Just ordered a 32 Amp alternator from bk-rider on ebay for $119. Seems like a good deal. They look reputable..... but then so do I.

Updated the parts list on the blog:

Cool, man! Big Mike at MMW is good people, and he won't do you wrong. My second build was from stuff from Malibu. You made a good choice.

The support I get from Mike is incredibly good. Not sure if the man ever sleeps!

Thanks John. I plan on the bike being mostly black and chrome so the Goodridge ebony looks like a great choice for running on the outside. I need to figure out the thread sizes on the master cylinders and the calipers. Is running hydraulics inside the frame a dumb idea? I'm going to have a hassle at the swing arm anyway. Looks like the Russell Pro System 2 would be better for inside the frame - if that is not an entirely dumb idea

The belt calculator is damn sweet. I was about ready to break out the math books

Handgrips finally arrived. The throttle grip inner is aluminum running on a steel handlebar. Surely I'm missing something here. Shouldn't there be some plastic liner material or something to reduce friction between the throttle and the handlebar?

Matches the foot pegs

Not much else to report. Got a bunch of stuff arriving from Jireh that will give me something to do on the weekend while I ponder the throttle friction issue. Any ideas?

You won't encounter any friction problems. I'm using billet grips on bare steel, and haven't had any issues. Smoothe as snot on seal skin.

I looked at your parts list. Looks like you got some pretty good deals. You will be very pleased with the Ultima 113. Loads of power. Your starter will have no probs. You may want to consider maybe using a Braille 14115 battery. I have one in both my bikes. Yeah, they cost some, but you'll see where that money is going; 360 CCA, 906 Pulse Cranking Amps!

thanks Nitro, because of the dropped seat, I've got limited space for the battery - it has to be a size 14 V-rod battery. Mike from MMW also recommended the Braille or Thunderstart. Best price I can find is around $150. Seems pricey for a battery but with the limited space, I've need to get the most CCA possible. The Thunderstart comes in at 280 CCA. The original battery I had in my parts list would never have fit - fortunately I measured before I placed the order

The alternator from bkrider and the starter (ultima thunderfire) from jireh arrived. Both free shipping and both arrived within a week. The chrome on the starter looks a little crappy on the right side near the mounting flange. It's mostly hidden from view unless you really look for it so I'm going to live with it. Not up to the nice finish of the other ultima components I have.

What is this?

Tidying up a bit I came across this spacer which came with the Ultima RSD transmisson. I guess it was supposed to be installed at some point during the assembly of the transmission and primary. It is about 1.25" OD and 0.985" ID. Can someone please tell me where it is supposed to go?

Running electrical and hydraulics inside makes for a clean looking prostreet...You need to take your time and plan everything out ahead of any assembly...Once engine and drivetrain are installed, it makes it nearly impossible to reach the places you need to reach. You dont want to be drilling entry and exit holes after paint.

Got the starter motor installed.

Started figuring out the wire harness routing. Have the Ultima wiring harness. Thought about mounting it under the gas tank

or above the oil tank under the seat.

Under the seat looks like the better option. Easy enough to fabricate a bracket for mounting it to the same tabs used for the oil bag mounting. Battery pokes out above the drop seat rails even at V-Rod battery dimensions. Need to find a smaller battery than size 14 that still delivers around 270 CCA. Any suggestions?
