TP Motors

I was just looking up the price of TP motors for the first time, their a little pricey aren't they? Is there something about them that makes them much better than an Ultima or S&S? Or is it just a preference thing?

The price sure doesn't make them better. My 2 cents. If you get a big inch TP, be prepared to clean your breathers frequently. If you get an S&S, get one assembled from them.

I love my 124 . Guess you would need to get a answer from a Wrench thats Worked on both!
Think crank pin is larger? And some other beefed up parts.
Now S&S has a twincam 124" evo Mounts ... it's a war!

Eh Gearhead
Ain't your breathers dumping into the Carb! HAven't even Look at mine

Got a ForceWinder style setup comming for the 124 HSR45 setup .
One piece plate breathers drilled to carh
K&N filter , 90% adjustable elbo.!
Soon I'll post pic to my Build thread later!

The TP's may appear to be pricey however that depends on where you shop. When comparing it to an S&S make sure you compare apples to apples. Meaning when I was S&S shopping several things were upgrades where as they were standard on the TP. S&S has a much better polished finish than TP. TP has nicer rocker box and cam covers than S&S. TP comes with a Mikuni which I prefer over an S&S carb. Now that doesn't make it better just a preference thing. They are very compatible motors.

I have no experience with the Ultima. Who's components are in it? TP has Jims and TP's own parts.

Rippo, my TP124 spit oil. First, it came routed to the intake. BAD IDEA for any custom, unless you're concerned about emissions... hot air and oil in the carb is not a good thing. Then I installed Wimmer breathers. A better setup but needed cleaning about every 200 miles. A buddy's TP124 blows oil bad, he had to route breather hoses under the bike. TP jacked around for awhile. I switched to an S&S124.

He has an issue for sure. I did get the usual amount of oil mist but no puking. Joe from TP needs to take the call as he has been first class with me.

Actually I don't get any oil now as I vented my heads into my pipes. Two bikes and the same setup without problems.

TP has two different polished finishes which are nicer in some area than S&S. You can use an S&S carb on the TP, we do. My 114 blows away most of the S&S motors we've used. The TP oil pump is better than the S&S, so are the breathers plus you get a better cam as standard than S&S offers. The TP tends to fire up much easier too, partly due to the better compression release set up.
First hand expierence. Thank you.

Rippo, the healing is coming along. Several surgeries later.... Thanks for asking.

Glad this thread popped up. I have been reading this forum pretty much on a daily basis for several months now. I know i dont post much and some ppl think that means your new to the forum. I prefer to read things and comment rarely. I am looking to build a new bike this spring, been leaning toward BBC, but the jury is still out on that right now. Yes Cal, i have looked at your site as well, and you may still get my business as my time frame gives me another month to decide. I really appreciate your knowledge on this site. You seem like a straight talking peson, a rarity in many business.
I have been leaning toward SS as most of my friends customs have em as did I, right now still have my old faithful HD and will keep that also. Only one guy i ride with has the TP motor and has not had any problems to date. Also i have been looking at the el bruto threads, price looks good but not to sure about that engine yet. Also nobody i know personally has one, hence my hesitation. Right now i was sold on the SS107" but then i notice S&S's website dont have the 107 on it anymore. As CAl stated is it out of production?

So i ask you guys what recommendation would Cal and some others suggest for a good motor and trans set up based on power and reliability. I do all types of riding from bar hopping to riding to events 1k miles away. I was seriously leaning toward a S&S 107" with a baker or jims tranny.

Thanks
Joe

Not a bad choice at all.
My next motor will be another TP, my third one, a square setup!Baker or Jims, whichever is available, Jims has nicer covers!

I ordered a TP 114 in my kit after talking to Joe at Calcustom. It had good power and was much more square than the S&S. Since the S&S is now "custom" for a 107 delivery also factored into my decision. The TP was shipped in 4 weeks and delivery on the S&S would have been longer. I also like the look of the TP rocker boxes. They look cleaner to me.

That's what I thought. I guess I just didn't like pushing two extra buttons, or their light blue color... Strong engine, just spit alot.

So as far as it goes now, from what I'm reading for a first time builder a good setup would be a TP 114 with a jim's tranny? Another question, does anyone use that new primary from performance machine? Just got thier 2004 catalog today and saw that in there and was curious about anyones experience with it.

Do you have any links to this info? It's definitely a wise move on their part.
